➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

6 months then? I suppose 4 is still way too young, right?
It depends on the cockerel. Cockerels that are running around with raging hormones at 4 months old can cause hens to produce fertile eggs while ones that don't get their hormones until much later will not be able to cause fertile eggs until later.

Thanks!! That makes sense! I’ll probably just wait until they’re older but I do want to eventually set their eggs. I know some of them were red at like 4 weeks old and some were also crowing too but now no crowing since they moved outside two weeks ago and no more fighting either it seems. Though one picks fights with the big girls. Thinking he’s a goner. But so far they all seem to stick to their own family groups. I’m hoping they’ll mingle more eventually. I have about 2-3 picked out to keep and choose from later on but I’m observing them all closely to try to determine their personalities too cause I may end up choosing another if the personality is better.

He is probably the dominant cockerel and is just trying to move up in the pecking order. Pecking order squabbles are not necessarily a good reason for culling.

The weird thing is he doesn’t seem like the dominant one amongst his flock mates and seems to back down from the Welsummer and some of the other boys. So maybe he is just hoping to become the dominant one? and hm that’s a good point! He might be a good one to keep actually cause he’s feisty. Might be more protective? But he doesn’t seem to back down. I don’t mind a bit of fighting and some of the other boys have gotten into fights too but back down. He literally once sought out my top hen and went charging at her from across the yard! So seems like a bit more than just a squabble. Seems like he was just purposely seeking out fights and harassing them. Though he does seem to have backed off now and sticks to his family.

:lau I know, I was mostly kidding. But I do want to hatch eggs from them when they’re old enough.

Thanks! Very helpful. I think it’ll probably be way too soon as they only hatched thanksgiving weekend so mostly kidding but I do want to hatch from them. Planning on keeping 3 boys and the girl for now and deciding later but I’m still watching them all closely to see if I chose wrong or whatever. Cause I have my faves but if they have a bad personality, I want to choose another before I get rid of them. I know it’s not a guarantee but still.
Honestly, truly bad cockerels are few and far between. I have not had many. Their flock situation and how they are handled has far more of an impact.

Thanks! Very helpful. So far they all seem pretty good. Mostly ignoring me and the adult girls. They even let them eat out of their bowl today when the other day one chased them off :lau progress :lau
