➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

my coturnix do well down to freezing/below from 4+ weeks through adulthood for the most part.....the problem here is not just the cold.....it’s rain/flooding followed by cold.......my adult buttons, parakeets, and finches have done fine down to 40 and slightly below with the cozy coop heater in there for added protection......i did bring the parakeets inside during forecasted frost just in case although they weren’t happy about it.......i had some scary days last year with 3-4 week old quail during heavy rain and 40-50* spring weather. it’s kinda been a constant “learning curve” from “school of hard knocks” so to speak because there’s just not a lot of good information about raising these birds outdoors in the midwest......we all have our individual challenges i guess!
Thanks! Sounds like they'd probably do okay in the greenhouse for winter, maybe with a heating panel on a thermostat. I might just get some this year then--assuming I can get some decent housing built for my turkeys, plus a duplex waterfowl house & a milking stanchion. And cages for quail... that's been the hold-up--building those cages and figuring out where to put them in the winter.

i had a heated waterer this last winter, but there have been several days since raising quail that I had to clean ice out of the waterers.....I’ve lost a few here and there to cold but most likely if cage kept in a greenhouse, you should be fine.....again I stress, it’s wet way more than cold that kills IME

It has a couple large vents that I kept open through the whole winter, which seemed to work well. The greenhouse birds had no frostbitten combs though most were singles, so... pretty good there.

2-3 pics of each chick....first is my tiger/cheetah, 2nd is one of my darkest, 3rd is a scarlet for @FortCluck and last is one that I’m 99% sure is from “pretty boy” roo

rain + cold.......it wasn’t forecasted to get bitter cold but my guess is that the rain/humidity created wetness that allowed them to get too cold overnight.......everything else did fine including parakeets, adult buttons, young quail, and adult/baby finches......the baby buttons were the only ones effected 😭😭😭
Buttons in general, can't handle temps below 50°F, especially if subjected to drafts.

Wet and cold is the double whammy.
