āž” Quail Hatch Along🄚

You have a faker in there with the new babies...lol
yes that is my ā€œlone survivorā€ it was in ā€œdire straitsā€ this morning when we went out and found most of them dead/dying but it has perked up a lot! I totally HATE indiana weather!!!

From the cold?
rain + cold.......it wasn’t forecasted to get bitter cold but my guess is that the rain/humidity created wetness that allowed them to get too cold overnight.......everything else did fine including parakeets, adult buttons, young quail, and adult/baby finches......the baby buttons were the only ones effected 😭😭😭

I'm scared to put my quail out. I wouldn't even put my meat turkeys out because it's going to be cool the next few days.

#2 is out. @Kiki is going to be upset because it's another yellow that is from my HG eggs.

my buttons were 3ish weeks old......my 3+ week old coturnix were just fine (and all but 2-3 color/runts) are already evicted into main aviary.....the ducks have been out for several weeks now and have actually started using their pool the past few days......i really think it was the wetness inside the cage that caused the problem......i should have either brought them inside or at least plugged in the heater and put their cage beside it. I really didn’t think that the rain/low temps would have had that effect or i would have brought them in.

How cold can they take, Muddy? It's not usually sub-zero here, but it's also not very unusual. Even in the double-layer greenhouse I had to break ice in the buckets with an actual hammer and several hard blows many times last winter. Would quail be able to survive that and thrive?

ETA: I mean coturnix--feathered, of course. I would probably only keep a small cohort of breeders through the winter.

my coturnix do well down to freezing/below from 4+ weeks through adulthood for the most part.....the problem here is not just the cold.....it’s rain/flooding followed by cold.......my adult buttons, parakeets, and finches have done fine down to 40 and slightly below with the cozy coop heater in there for added protection......i did bring the parakeets inside during forecasted frost just in case although they weren’t happy about it.......i had some scary days last year with 3-4 week old quail during heavy rain and 40-50* spring weather. it’s kinda been a constant ā€œlearning curveā€ from ā€œschool of hard knocksā€ so to speak because there’s just not a lot of good information about raising these birds outdoors in the midwest......we all have our individual challenges i guess!
