➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

1 got stuck between the heating pad and the walls, one squeezed out of the bars and died on the floor. I like glass walls, paper towels, and overhead heat sources.

Almost lost another one when it got its head stuck under the heating pad supports. :th Chicks never do that.
You know, I was just coming around to wanting some quail but it sounds like they’d end up dead before I could even get them in a safe cage. Our chicks have to put up with a lot, considering we toss them outside in an old dog crate at a couple days to introduce to the flock. :gig Not that I’d do that with quail though. Isn’t corzya a big thing with chickens and quail together?

Dunno. People say you aren't supposed to keep them together... but I had quail years ago that were with chickens with no issues. :idunno
These quail are fine as well.

Hmm. I wonder if brooding chicks and quail together helps build a sort of immunity. :caf Time to research
Either that or the strain in my area has had a sink-or-swim approach to its breeding with all non-immune birds going kaput. I kind of wonder if that's the case, since I've never seen anyone around here with issues stemming from mixed flocks, and trust me, there's a lot of them around.

That also could be a possibility. Natural selection and all that

You'll find people adamantly arguing both directions because it's 99% luck of the draw whether you have issues or not. Aggressive culling and biosecurity practices in nearby flocks would certainly help!

Ooh, could be.

I just candled my 6 day old eggs - 12 clear duds and 60 somewhere on the spectrum of "kinda orangeish" to "uhhh why is that one upside down" to "definitely developing!". I think I'll get 45-65% hatch rate from initial numbers, not too bad considering they're all shipped eggs in winter and young unproven pairs.

One of my good friends got me a professional candler with adjustable cup for christmas and it made things SO EASY, even this early. If you have trouble candling quail eggs - that's the difference for sure!

16 more went into the incubator, 24 fertile-ish eggs on deck in case more quit definitively.

I used them for a few weeks with my chicken chicks a few years ago but I didn't think they were getting enough water at the time.
I need to pull my nipples out and see if my quailies can figure them out but I think I'd rather go with some type of cup.
Say what???
