➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Anyone know why two 2 week old quail would just up and died overnight. There was nothing wrong with them yesterday.
it typically is due to them getting wet, but it is sometimes failure to thrive, and sometimes injury (flushing and hitting head or getting stuck in the wire), another possibility it impacted crop from ingesting bedding or something else.......

Two 2 week old quail. There’s only one left of the 3. My husband found them dead in the aviary.
2 week olds are a bit young for aviary with the rains we’ve been having.....that’s how i lost my buttons. the rain/high humidity drops their temp just enough to kill in this weather.

Now I’m pissed because I’m going to blame myself.

Well you live and you learn

My husband said that maybe a snake got them. As crazy as it sounds, it wouldn't be the first time a snake has done this. He checked them for marks and saw none. All he was mad about is that my snowy was the one that was dead and the brown one. I put them out like a week ago. Yesterday they were fine and running around.

I just put a bunch of pine shavings on the ground and the other one seems to be fine. I gave it a bigger hideout and it still has its smaller one. I am going to put more fake plants in there too.
you can’t blame yourself.....i’ve experimented with different ages going out in all kinds of weather and sometimes mother nature throws a curve ball that we aren’t prepared for!! 4 weeks is typically safe for outdoors.....can sometimes do 3 weeks in summer if not constant rain and flooding. it’s not the temps alone.....it’s the temps plus rain that cause the issue.
i just lost one of the smaller ones from the easter hatch in the subaviary cuddled up to the heater!! i don’t know if she got stuck or too hot??? i have since moved the other two out and removed the heater!!

I have more hatching next week and I will be super careful with them. I still have the 7 I kept from the scarlet. I kept all the ones with the most yellow. I cannot wait to see how they feather out. I gave that all white one a lot of pine shavings to cuddle in. I also gave it a huge hideout made from a storage tote. It loves it. Hopefully it will be good because the temps are going back up starting tomorrow.

i’m really liking the red mulch we put down yesterday!! we couldn’t turn the base because of the rain/flooding and we couldn’t put down straw around the snowball bush because RK didn’t have any in stock! but there has definitely been an improvement in smell!! as well as we can now walk through without sinking in mud and 💩!!
