quick thread derail...
two birds, 3 weeks and 2 days... female or non-feather sexable? One is definitely some kind of wild color, but the other one...

I'm leaving the incubator on for a while yet, but I don't expect any more chicks. I was surprised this morning to find two chicks rather than the one I was expecting.

119 egg set, 108 made it to lockdown, 98 chicks hatched.
how big is your brooder? I’m finding that these rambunctious chicks seem to need more space than adult birds.

It's a 50 gallon tote. In a week or less, I will divide them into two batches each in a 50 gallon tote. I have 3 that I have converted into brooders. By the time they outgrow those, they will be ready to go outside.

I have 7 in 1.5’ x 3’ space. So dusty... I want to kick them out already, but it’s 14F outside :hmm

I got ahold of some hatching eggs for blacks from K.Dale lines. Unfortunately 4 of the 10 eggs arrived cracked, but the seller is gonna replace them after the holidays.

They went into the incubator today, which means that if any hatch, they will be Christmas quail :)
How did your 6 eggs go? I won an auction for 10, he sent 18, 3 were cracked and I set 15. I didn’t candle until lockdown, and I found another had been cracked and I didn’t notice, and it was oozing, and 2 didn’t develop. That left 12 at lockdown. I have 11 chicks and one late quitter.

I raised one from k dale previously, from a variety box he sent me. I raised a son from that one hen, crossed with a blue from k dale. The son definitely has brown highlights, and is more Tibetan than black imo. The hen has nothing but black all over, she’s more soft and downy than all of my other quail, and has some health concerns so very rarely lays. She’s really funny, she is easily scared and when I open the lid, she flips on her side and kicks and flaps, when the lid is closed and all is quiet, she gets up, shakes off, and goes back about her business lol. She was the last to hatch and was always quite small.

Anyway, my 11 look more like Tibetans than blacks, I’m not going to bring it up to him until I know for sure, but several have a definite rusty hint to the down, and the original k dale was jet black with no brown hues at all. My original from k dale is also solid, and only had white eyebrows at hatch, these all have white face and chest markings.

There’s one trying to fly in this pic, it looks adorable.

I gotta contact him since he was gonna send replacements but with the holidays it's been crazy. I bought 10, he sent 10, then four were cracked. Out of the six survivors, three hatched, but one pitched itself upside down into a dip between the incubator floor and the water tray and killed itself, sigh. So that leaves two.

I ought to send him a message, actually, and ask if he would send replacement eggs with some sparkly eggs if I purchase some sparklies.
