➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

@Texas Kiki.....you can make my final # for this hatch 21....i think all the runts are gone now. No more hatching assistance for me!! If they are meant to be, they will be!!
I think that and the brooder system I have now will solve most of my problems and alleviate a lot of stress!!

20 so far, I have them in 2 incubators. It appears my little giant is about a day or two behind the hovabator. I probably had the hovabator a little warmer. But lots and lots of external pips.

I’m finding they slip so so easy on the incubator grating. Then get splayed leg. I’m going to have to put the drawer liner stuff in next time. But it’s too late this round. My ducks never had that problem so it’s new for me. I hobbled the ones last batch and they all ended up dying so I’m not going to be fixing any issues this time. If they make it they make it. It’s hard to tell my tender heart that but I just can’t spend that much time on them with all of life’s other responsibilities.

My 6 yr old wants to put one of the quail in our 4H County Fair. So we will probably be doing that.

Yes, I hate mine too. It is obviously designed for chickens. They slip and slide and get their little feet caught. I have a tiny plastic bin lined with paper towels sitting inside the main incubator so when one hatches I ninja it in there to dry off before it can hurt itself.

I am up to 11 this morning! I see at least six more pips still.

I'm so excited for you! I am like your 6 year old and I am also very excited to take some of mine to the county and state fairs this summer :D (Well, if the newcastle issues are more under control). I hope you do awesome!

my ssc eggs already arrived!! wasn’t expecting them until tomorrow! no updates yet on button eggs I ordered for this hatch. expected delivery in ebay is tuesday. still gotta get the big bator cleaned up and ready to go. looks like i’m going to have to take it apart for cleaning :sick

Out of 24 eggs that made it to lockdown (I think I had 32 originally, but I squished two early on accidentally so they don't count), 11 have hatched and I see at least 8 more pips :yesss: No problem babies *so far*. I am finally getting decent at this, I think my first hatch rate was 20%!

Also, I'm so happy, I got a teeny little ginger out of my blue female, which means she does carry German red pastel genes from her daddy. Only chick I got from him so I'm relieved.

I’ve been a ninja with the 20 so far but one sat in the bator all night while I slept and it was doing the splits. Hopefully it will fix itself. The things you learn along the way......
Hatching quail is waaaaaaay easier than hatching ducks though!

Congratulations Coturnix :jumpy

Sorry Kiki for the lack of numbers.. 9th Jan hatched 14, of which 8 remain.
9th Feb hatched 35, of which 19 remain.. probably end up with zero at this rate :hit

But our own eggs are in the bator!! The true test of my quail husbandry!
19 is a popular number.
;)

@007Sean and @R2elk and others! plans are in the works to build a separate aviary for my quail, and add other birds such as ornamental pheasants, possibly partridges etc. My question for you are as follows:
1) I was looking at a pheasant chick assortment from cackle hatchery as I can get 15 chicks for less than the cost of 1 juvenile pair. Any experience with this hatchery and does it sound like a good idea??
2) what type of plants, grasses etc would be good to plant in the aviary for the gamebirds? or any good sites to look at ideas/designs? (trying to research on youtube and google but with your combined experience, I chose to start with the experts’ opinions!)
