➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Why did you shriek?
How long did it take you?
Which method did you use?
And, because I really want to know, did you do it in the kitchen?

[BUTCHERING DESCRIPTION, SKIP IF DESIRED]

I thought I hadn't killed my very first one when it moved A LOT. I had.

I think I averaged about 13-14 minutes a bird, but that's with plucking, I kept the skin on. I am sure I will be faster next time.

I snipped the heads with some good shears. It did the trick pretty instantly but getting though all the skin took an extra snip.

I did do it in the kitchen. There is always either snow or bears outside so it seemed easiest. It was not messy at all!

any suggestions would be awesome!! i’m learning the hard way about the whole ebay thing! went with this person on button eggs due to good feedback but no update on shipping yet!!
First...get off eBay.
Find a dealer here on byc.
It is easy to investigate people on here.

You are the first person I’ve heard of keeping the skin on. Did you do the scalding like you do for chicken?

I'm planning in trying to keep a few birds whole this next butcher time...with the skin on too.

The feathers come out really easy when just plucking.
I know because I started to pluck one.

with the exception of my eggs from myshire, (which i only ordered on ebay because cheaper deals than direct i. some cases), the buttons were my first ebay purchase as I’ve heard many horror stories!! all my chickens and my first quail eggs came from hatcheries direct or rural king. would love to find a byc dealer!!! only one i’ve run across really is fishmtfarm.

@007Sean and @R2elk and others! plans are in the works to build a separate aviary for my quail, and add other birds such as ornamental pheasants, possibly partridges etc. My question for you are as follows:
1) I was looking at a pheasant chick assortment from cackle hatchery as I can get 15 chicks for less than the cost of 1 juvenile pair. Any experience with this hatchery and does it sound like a good idea??
2) what type of plants, grasses etc would be good to plant in the aviary for the gamebirds? or any good sites to look at ideas/designs? (trying to research on youtube and google but with your combined experience, I chose to start with the experts’ opinions!)
The first thing to do before anything else is to check your G&F laws to see whether you need a permit for any of your selection. I believe Indiana requires a permit for game birds.

yes a permit is required for bobwhites, ringnecks etc as far as gamebirds. but i’m planning to stick with coturnix and ornamental pheasants to avoid permit requirements for now. not exactly sure where chukars fall into it as far as indiana laws yet. if i ever have enough land to become more than a backyard hobby farmer, I may do the whole permit thing and add variety!

I want to just slice under the ribs and around the vent and pull everything out that way next time, but I couldn't find my good video on it. I cut down down the backbone from the throat on both sides, around the vent, and pulled everything out. The lungs are the WORST, ew! I kept the hearts for my kitty cats.

What she said, SUPER easy! Just annoying and time consuming.
