➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

The quail were still sleeping out in the open when I checked, but it was beginning to sleet. The wind has since picked up (making me worry about the coop rolling over! :th ), and the temperature dropped drastically in an hour.

Joking. I am sure they are fine. It’s just quite a first night, not to mention the next few days. I couldn’t take another brooder change though! I have ny living room back, I can vacuum without thinking how they will react... It’s going to be a great two months until the next batch!

I'm sure they are fine! I couldn't imagine brooding in my house! Anything I hatch gets 2-3 days indoors MAX then outside.

mine have all done great outdoors even with the crazy weather! (even freezing their water). since i move them to the outdoor cage first at around 4 weeks, I put the cozy coop heater upstairs on low for a week or 2. a few of them hang out by it but most stay on the lower level near the food!! valentine’s babies will hopefully get transitioned this weekend so I can clean out cage for these babies!

I had a one brooder change max policy. Even in January, thirty as a high. Week-olds did not even cry for heat. Until recently, I had electric in the coop. I put up a divider with wind block (from the pop door), and offered heat at first.
Recently it was in the forties, the chicks were four-weeks I think. They started screaming at sundown. I gave heat. One was trampled, and died inside overnight. Two just froze away from the heat. They arrived from the feed store weak (I know, no feed store!), but sheesh!

My house is 60*, and they have not had heat since about two weeks.

Wow! When I was a kid I thought we were tough keeping our house at 65* in the winter!

I spent half the afternoon outside pruning today! Love seeing and feeling the sunshine again at last! And now my face hurts. Annoying allergies.

Lockdown today! And now I’m worried about humidity. The incubator’s instructions just said to pour water in the bottom, and last I checked the little hygrometer said 75%. Not sure how to give it enough but not too much plus not run out before they hatch. :barnie

What kind of incubator? 75% Rh is too high.

I have been running my lockdown humidity too high like that and had 18 fail to hatch as result this time. my eggs in lockdown are around 45 this time. if your incubator is a janoelle, you can add water through the top vent with a syringe if needed. opening the bator for humidity maintenance etc during lockdown won’t hurt your hatch. it’s once they are pipped that you want to be more careful with amount of time open.
