They're so sweet aren't they? Problem is, I'm not sure when they started laying. I haven't been out there to check since the weekend. But, none look alike so hopefully there are 7 layers now. I dunno. I'm so excited!
check twice a day!

Just looking at the picture of the eggs, my guess is you had 3 or 4 hens start going all at once. The type of pattern on the shell is *usually* pretty consistent to each hen and I def see 1-2 eggs each of 3-4 "types". Totally a guess, though. I am also currently in the process of trying to nail which of my 7-10 week pullets are starting to lay when to record and even with only 2-3 hens in each container it's darn tricky!
Congrats on the eggs!I see many chicks and/or omelettes in your future.
Thank you, it's definitely tricky! I wasn't sure if they'd always have the same pattern of spots, or if they have to work out the kinks like chickens.
I hatched these last fall, they're just starting to lay. Lucky you that you've got eggs already
I think quail egg omelettes are in the very near future, chicks will follow after we get what we have sorted out.
You know, I also got tripped up by the "the pattern is exactly the same" saying, but after a lot of examining them I think I can safely say it's usually just *similar.* Always the same type of pattern, though. Maybe they get even more consistent as they got older!
Bleh, one of the few upsides to having to keep them inside due to severe predator activity is having them on a (very gentle) artificial schedule. By the time it affects their laying life I'll either have a gigantic retiree aviary somewhere or will have hardened to culling my older birds![]()
I don't have a way to run electricity out there without the puppies eating an extension cord and I couldn't stand the smell when they were inside. Fortunately we don't have heavy predation here. Mostly owls and hawks and the quail are in an aviary.
Are your quail the wild tupe or do you have different colors?
