➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

1/25/18 45 bobwhites hatched

My 200 are hatching as we speak!!!:th

That is A LOT! That sounds like so much fun.

I have eight little cocktail weenies! One has attitude already. (Yes it's terribly messy but it's all freshly ground food; they dumb still).

And here are his stupid little feathers :love He's such a good smart boy. You guys are going to be so sick of hearing about this silly quail.

I really hope he is actually a she; my only fear at this point is that I doubt he has any hope for a satisfying social life otherwise. He kind of relies on others to feel secure and I don't exactly have a spare group of just hens for him to chill with.

He's doing great now; if I can't give him a good quality of life at any point he'll be recategorized as dinner.

Completely off topic..

If bobwhites live in pairs.. if you incubated your own baby bobwhites, at what age would they start trying to kill their hatch mates?
Depending on how many birds and how big your enclosure is, their not as likely to be aggressive towards eachother until breeding season rolls around. In the wild, after breeding season and the chicks have reach juvenile stage, they will start conveying up again and won't fight.
I run 5 males to 20 females in a 300 sq.ft. enclosure no fussing or blood baths.

Bob's in the wild pair up, not so much for captive Bob's they have lost the instinct to pair up but if in too small an enclosure they will fight. They will pair up if you only put 2 together, though....that's been my experinces with Bob's, your experince may and probably will vary.

They are kinda dumb aren’t they

How many empty shells do you have this morning?
20 so far, I have them in 2 incubators. It appears my little giant is about a day or two behind the hovabator. I probably had the hovabator a little warmer. But lots and lots of external pips.

I’m finding they slip so so easy on the incubator grating. Then get splayed leg. I’m going to have to put the drawer liner stuff in next time. But it’s too late this round. My ducks never had that problem so it’s new for me. I hobbled the ones last batch and they all ended up dying so I’m not going to be fixing any issues this time. If they make it they make it. It’s hard to tell my tender heart that but I just can’t spend that much time on them with all of life’s other responsibilities.

My 6 yr old wants to put one of the quail in our 4H County Fair. So we will probably be doing that.

Oh and these suckers are serious about zipping! Once they start it’s fast. Ducks are a lot more lazy about it. Sorry for all the duck references, it’s my only other poultry experience.:gig
Ducks are ridiculously slooooowwwww.
