➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

My cheap butt just puckered at that price!:gig But I think that about a lot of stuff.

:gig I wouldn't have spent the money but I got it as my one special treat for myself with my annual bonus from work. The rest paid bills and bought coop materials for the chickens I'll be hatching next.

well 26 + 13 + 3 all survived the night! last 7 eggs not showing any activity and I had a “smell” from the bator this morning. not sure if bad egg or just from all leftover shells/pieces. will probably investigate further tonight and go ahead and candle remaining eggs as will be approaching 40 hour mark since first hatch.

have got to do some maintenance on my run this weekend as I found 1 of my pharaoh males sitting patiently on the outside this morning waiting for me to put him back in!! :barnie:he
not exactly sure if he squeezed out the bottom where everyone has dug holes for dust bathing or if he managed to get 8 ft up and through a spot netting pulled away!:idunno

The first few of my 8 babes to hatch are officially a week old today...moved the whole group out to the garage last night, brooder box temp dipped down to 85 degrees this morning, but all are doing great (no huddling or piling up for warmth) and growing like WEEDS! Haven’t lost one yet (which I was pretty paranoid about given everything I’ve read about their suicidal tendencies)...assuming they can’t be taken off heat and moved to outdoor hutch until they’re fully feathered, correct? And that will happen around 3 weeks or so?

Go weigh a jumbo for me

Go buy a scale if you don't have one.
:old
I have a kitchen scale, but its in a box somewhere in the basement since we moved over 2 years ago. I have limited kitchen storage unfortunately, so a lot of our kitchenware has remained unpacked. Perhaps I'll try to find the scale this weekend.

Amazon has a folding scale that fits in the silverware drawer.

Here are a couple things I’ve learned about quail in the last couple months:
1)Leaving overhead lights on for too long doesn’t allow them to properly rest and they become aggressive.

2)Letting them get too hot causes them to be aggressive.

3)Not one single quail that became weak during the first 7 days of life survive past 2 weeks of age.

4)Allow ample access to food and water at all times. Because they will trample each other and drown each other to get to food and water.

5) They are dumb and like killing themselves.:th

6) They drown in the shallowest of water.

7)Putting water straight from the sink into their waterers make them too cold then they pile up and smother each other.

8)Overcrowding them makes them aggressive.

9)They are jerkwads to each other.

I’m sure my issues were magnified because I had large hatches and I assumed they would be pretty similar to brooding ducks. The breed I picked (bobwhites) could also come into play with above observations.
I keep hearing/reading about quail being suicidal and drowning. I have not had these problems yet at all. As for aggression, the certainly are "jerkwads" towards each other.
