➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Some color genes are lethal (or close to it) when birds get two copies, one from each parent. Blue/silver and at least one of the golden genes, for example.
Ah, I see. Is it similar at all to the health issues that arise in the color dilutions of dogs? Too many recessive genes? I'm sure I'm not wording that correctly. Genetics are fascinating but my understanding of them is fairly poor when it comes to vocabulary.

Someone gave us 5 adult coturnix quail this weekend. I’m pretty sure a couple are Italian and one is a darker color. It may be Tibetan or another brown color, but I’m not sure. I’ll try posting pictures because I have no idea how to tell male from females. One of them has several back feathers plucked off. I might have to separate the coturnix from the bobwhites. But I haven’t been able to watch them interact with each other enough yet.

Probably!

There are recessive lethal genes (takes a gene from each parent and then kills, but if a critter only inherits a copy from one parent they look normal and there's no way to tell), and dominant lethal genes (one copy "expresses" in some way, like a fancy color, but two copies kill).

I'm sure there are other kinds too for that matter, but those are the most basic and most of what you run into.

They also gave us about 15 female Georgia Giants. And they are giant compared to my quail even though they are both considered jumbos. My tiny males have been running around trying to jump on top of the huge females. It’s pretty humorous. I’m going to try to video it. I even got a Bobwhite egg too!

Okay, so, this is not going to be a great hatch, confirming that 'ignore them completely until lockdown' is only a semi-viable option for my climate. But I also set a bunch of older eggs, 8-9 days, when usually I try to keep it under 5, so I was kind of expecting that anyways.

Certain pairs are hatching much better.

The left side of the incubator is hatching much better (or earlier).

@Sara L some of yours may have hatched but I lost my lettering cheat sheet and have to find it .

Also, it's spring, it's spring! :jumpy:bun

I am so anxious to get everyone outside. I have to throw up the greenhouse, the rest of my garden beds, the bigger swatch of electric fence, the watering system, and then the quail/bunny/cat runs :D And then come up with some sort of rotational system so they all get enough time out there. And then build my sprouting flat system. Oi! Why was I excited about spring again?

I totally get where you’re coming from there!! with spring comes soooo much work! we got the initial framing of the deck extension done today despite the yucky weather! it started with get this step done and then hide from the rain for 20-30 minutes and then run out and do the next step!! Evidently I had a little scuffle take place in the run today too as I noticed one of my little reds got his butt plucked!! going to try and keep eye on it but catching it to take a closer look and provide treatment wasn’t happening! I also switched red light on pearls to a regular white bulb because they no longer need heat and they’re freaking out because they’ve been inside shed with red light or low-light for 3 weeks!!
