➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

17 more hatched overnight, with two left to go!

All sorts of colors in here—I'll try to keep track of who's who when I take pictures.

Is it bad I was just thinking of asking you to bring him when you come to get the birds so I can try him with Pepper?

I totally would but he's way too teeny. I think they just turned 9 weeks, and I swear I'd be surprised if he was 3 lbs. We shall see; hopefully he packs on the weight now that he's separated from his huge litter.

My last egg has been un-pipped for 24 hours longer than the second-to-last. I finally caved and took it out to examine—no sign of pip, no beak in the air cell, no vasculature visible upon candling. Is this a dead chick or am I just freaking out?

It's dead.

Oh! That thing is just a ring of polymer clay—you could smoosh it to be any size you needed. I only used it for the first few days and some in the middle of the hatch. Stopped using it when it discolored one of the eggshells. Turns out it can also pick up the tiny pigmented granules on the shell surface.

Might use play-dough for any future hatches—now that I think about it, I never checked to see if the clay was safe. Worked great though! :D

I have playdough.
I'm so going to try it.
