➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

What am I forgetting? Why can’t the broody keep it?
That and more eggs due to hatch next weekend so not only concerned about accidental death due to size difference and first time mommas, I didn’t want them to stop sitting on the other eggs.

I have a baby with a clawed foot. I’ve had feet uncurl on their own in 48 hours, so I’m chill right now.
However, I have skimmed whenever you guys mention it. My apologies. How on earth do you put a shoe on an ant?

My little curled foot uncurled without any help after 4 days or so of running around.

To put a shoe on an ant cut 2 pieces of masking tape. While using all 4 of your hands, hold the chick still, spread the toes, stick the tape to the bottom and then stick the tape to the top. Trim most of the overhang but leave enough that it must hold the foot the correct way. Easy peasy, Louisey. :D

Remember that nothing succeeds like a chicken with no teeth.

So psyched for those eggs/chicks! I am one of those hipsters who'd happily buy blue eating eggs, just for the novelty of it (I'd buy celadon hatching eggs, too, but nobody tell my family that :D).

How's the aviary site coming along—got any progress pics? :pop
No progress yet really besides clearing. I'll post some pictures when I start leveling after Monday

Big day for the quail over here. Almost finished with the new coop. Just working out some details of an optional divider that can be used when transitioning/integrating different hatches. Also considering making another optional divider for one of the more sheltered areas to turn it in to an outdoor brooder.

Did a one week weigh in and found a big range from the runt at 22 g to the largest at 42 g. The average works out to about 34 grams.

idk if it’s because loner chick or my first homegrown (and without traditional incubation) but BABY is like the absolute cutest quail chick ever!!! :lau

we caught and banished Hodor to chicken area at dusk! Soooo Pitiful! thinks he’s being punished......how do I deal with these chicks that know no other life than quail life???
