➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Yes, however, the weather prognosticators did not say cover your quail cages. They said it would rain. Good with rain. Not good with howling tornado force winds. At the point I understood this, I was fine with the quail getting damp. The top of the bedding dried.

Other issue was tarps act very much like sails. The coops are top heavy and would go for a ride.

Good thoughts though. Keep them coming!

I have small peices of tin cut off of sheets on each end of my triple hole hutch, doesnt hold heat in the way wood would but keep blowing rain from getn to them. Also all my pens possible are facing south, most if my weather comes from you Texans to the west, and what comes from the south isnt gonna be anything i can do anything about(hurricanes.)

Mine are facing south with the west side enclosed on 4 sides. The top and bottom are wire for air flow. I put a cardboard on floor with compost for them to pick through and sleep on. They have an area to get away from most of the wind.

It is the little things you have to pay attention to. Unfortunately, until you see it, no amount of questioning and reading will connect the dots.

I have the coops on boards to stabilize and keep them from rotting. From January when the paint was drying. We have spiders to eat gnats now. Recycled lumber mostly, refrigerator shelves, new wire & tin. Fun project piecing this together. Less than $80 not including my time. $50 worth of roof. 8' width x 2' deep x 2' tall cage area. On legs that need to be cut down. I learned a bit on this one.

The 6' one is more elegant. Darker with boards on the back wall. I went all recycled lumber (6' shipping crates) and have $50 into that one with $35 of roof.

Have a rocket quail. As I was putting the feed in, one of the quail babies rockets past my face and into the world. I get the feed situated and close the coop. The chickens looked but didn't mess with the chick. Into the tall grass (chicken lounge area under the bush). I make haste to the garage to get the crab/quail net for the baby since the big quail/fish net would only slow it down.

Through the fence into the garden. So around the pen into the garden I go. Under the other chicken lounge bush. I strategically position myself between it and the dogs who are always interested in what I am doing (they absolutely love chicken TV!). Then once in the open, I netted the quail and return her to the coop. Success!

After I situate her, as I'm closing the door another one hurtles itself at the world only to bounce off the closing door.

These things weren't flying or showing any interest in flying until yesterday. They have found the weak link. I'm sure that one is telling stories about being in the world. Fun times.

I had to move Solo out into a closed cage because he figured out just yesterday he has wings.

I had one of my four-ish week olds make a break for it the other day. I had the coop door open and bent down to scoop some food. I looked up in time to see him make a sight line out of the coop and then fly. I could almost hear him shouting “freedom!!”. Then he landed about 10 feet away and didn’t seem to know what else to do so I scooped him up and put him back.

My twins...the boy has never made a sound until I just moved Solo outside into the cage next to them.

The Mad twin:

I really like your cardboad boxes when i first read of them i thought the cheapo aluminum pans would also work well if you run out. Does it last about a wk or do they kick it all out in 3 days?

I haven't changed the twins dirt since I moved them out. It's at least three weeks old.

My adult quail...I usually add a cup of dirt every few days and change the box out every week.
They are messier and play in it a lot more than the babies.
