We believed something we read on the internet, that Seemed to work, thats all. I read every bit of it twice. i see where your coming from and i asked an honest question. They also say to use moth balls and that would be furthure proof of what your saying. Im trying to have my information clear. Thanks

I apologize, I wasn't meaning to be condescending. Just offering a better way of truly preserving whatever part of the bird you wanted to preserve and cutting the amount of time to cure from months to days or a week.

Yes, the borax soap can be used but it has a detergent in it...plain borax is better. When I was mounting birds, if I wanted to eat the bird, I would use cornmeal while skinning. If I was just mounting the bird I would use Calorox exclusively. Using salt will dry the meat by drawing the moisture out of the muscles but doesn't 'preserve' the skin, and help keep bugs from getting to whatever it is that you're trying to preserve. You can also use alum to draw the moisture out of whatever you want to 'preserve' but it too will not keep the bugs away.

Interestingggg. Once my birds get going and have to get rid of boys I will definitely try the different methods. I've got some taxidermied pheasants and quail I inherited from my grandpa(prob 50+yrs old at this point) that I gave to my friend. Soon I will have a dead flock and live flock

Yep, if properly 'preserved' and taken care of, dusting, wiping down with a damp cloth occasionally, a mount could last 100 years.

@007Sean.....starting to wish I had listened more closely to you!! I’m still losing about 1 quail per day despite my efforts to find the aggressor! It’s happening overnight to first light. Hubby wants to try sending chukars to chicken area until we can look at dividing the aviary. I was ready to start processing!!! the chukar are almost 3 months now and looking like at least 2 males....same with the pheasants at least 2 males. The remaining MM are 1 girl and 1 of the oddballs that is half size still. would 1 male to 3-4 hens would be ok if they get separate pens?

Yes when meat and fat are properly removed and the skin is cleaned a mount could last forever.

Is anyone else incubating Button quail eggs? I got roughly a dozen and a half today. They are way tinier than I expected, and oh my, the colour! They're like olives. How does one remove the chicks from the incubator without squishing them? Even the coturnix are incredibly fragile, and these eggs are half their size, easy.

Uggggh the universe is conspiring against meeee. Hatch rate of the 120 jmf eggs looks dismal and apparently they got hit by that storm you guys were buying or not buying tp for. I might have. To buy replacement eggs from someone else :/

Any of you guys buy celadon from breeders besides jmf?
