Are you noticing a lot of little flying bugs like flies or gnats near the quail or anywhere for that matter?Okay. So checked on the flock this morning and two more fatalities. Both 8 week males. One appeared “normal” the other had a little poop on his vent feathers and tiny whitish wormy things.
Temps have been high for a while (90s - 100) with super high humidity too. I’ve been giving them ice water once a day. Could it just be the heat? Did the worms come after death or could they be an infestation of some kind?
Butcher day was supposed to be tomorrow. Is it still safe to do it?
This farming thing is getting complicated.
As always thanks for everyone’s awesome help!![]()

So I didn’t get a picture. The worms were small and thin. Maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch long and less than 1/16 inch wide.
We’ve had some flies but nothing terrible. Maybe a few in the house every day since the kids don’t keep the doors closed.A few more out by the coop but definitely less than last year. There were a few buzzing around when I retrieved the bodies.
I don’t recall any other significant amount of flying bugs other than mosquitoes and lightening bugs.
That is better than the alternative right? Points to it maybe being heat related? Is there a difference? I guess u thought of it first since i wasnt here.
Probly after death maggots by your description

I’m in central Iowa and have been dealing with 90s and high humidity for a week or so and 80s and 90s before that.
They have hardware cloth on front and back of the coop for ventilation. They have a tinted plastic roof but we also have giant pine trees that shade most of the backyard so no direct sun.
I check the birds at least twice a day. I was out there yesterday around 6pm and today at 11 am when I found them dead. The one with maggots could have been missed last night I guess because it was behind a little partition in the coop.
Just frustrating. You think you kind of know what you’re doing and then suddenly birds start dying.
I’m completely baffled now! I went out this morning to check on everyone and noticed that my outer chicken gate had popped open. (it’s a double gate with outer chicken wire and inner chain link) did a quick head count and all the baby (3 week old) quail were there, chickens were fine, bunnies were fine. A handful of adult quail had wandered in. (looked like mostly females) I returned the adults that I saw to the aviary. There was still food and water available so we just went out to do the feeding around 1. when we went out this time there was a dead, mostly eaten adult female in the chicken area??? my last death occurred early this week in the aviary. So who/what is my “killer”???
