Quail getting into position to break out of the egg
Ok I'm moving the babies outside today. There are 3 chicks who think their sole purpose in life is to peck everyone. Just went through and put coconut oil on like 20 bald backs and the pecking just started yesterday. Uggggh. Will have to run an extension cord out for the heat plate.
How old are they? I removed the heat lamp from the last batch after just a week because it was so warm. They were also in the garage protected from wind/rain.

They're a week and a half. It's been dropping into the 60s at night and we're supposed to be dropping into daytime low 70s starting saturday. My aviary is pretty sheltered but not gonna risk 45 hypothermia babies.

I completely understand.

Hi guys! Finally back! Time to sleep for twelve days.

I'm trying to get to all of the notifications and messages I missed but if I accidentally skip you just poke me again.

@el dorado quail congrats on the hatch! You finally have your horde. As soon as I find and charge my phone I'd love to hear about how the other ones went too

@Nabiki I'm so glad baldie healed up well! She's a stunner normally. I'm really glad I didn't have to stress about the petsitter trying to keep an eye on her.

@Maiahr I saw that you had some questions about color genetics, and I'll see what I can wrangle for you. The color calculator is a bit dubious (I had half a mind to make a new one at some point, got deep into the research for it, and had a "hell no, it will not work" moment) and some of the genes you're working with I've gotten conflicting info and results for anyways.

@mixedUPturk @muddy75 and @Texas Kiki I am soooooo glad I don't live closer to you guys. Infinite colors! I'd never stop collecting! Your birds are all looking so great.

My critters all look great :D I think I lost one iffy quail, but out of 20-something birds, 5 rabbits, 3 cats, and a dog, I will take it, that seems excellent to me. My petsitter kicked butt and I am super grateful to @Sara L for being emergency question contact for them.

I miss my jumbos. At least one of the hens was laying, so I was getting fresh eggs to eat. None of my current hens are laying yet.

I got to hear from the guy who got my jumbos that he got 5 eggs over the weekend from them. *sigh* Must... be... patient...

Oh, I did manage to come home with more animals than I left with, somehow. A kangaroo mouse hitched a ride home in our trailer.

This year was bizarrely full of life. It's normally nothing but alkaline chalk as far as the eye can see. This time we saw doves, crows, rodents, and a shit ton of bugs.

Picture yourself extremely intoxicated, wandering into a full size lit up pyramid blasting music, and in the center there is a huge crystal absolutely surrounded by flabbergasted hippies watching a praying mantis rock out like he is the life of the party.

Ugh... wtf? This sounds like the intoxicating was a bit more than alcohol.
