➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Quail getting into position to break out of the egg
Has anyone here hatched celadon eggs? I have a young hen from a mixed batch with no known celadon gene who is producing all sea green or robin blue eggs and I would love to have more of that color. I was thinking of ordering some celadon eggs for a male to breed with her, but heard that those celadon eggs are small and have a bad hatch rate. This hen’s eggs are some of the biggest in my young flock and I wouldn’t want complications to arise in future progeny. Thoughts?

In my experience the single random celadon hens that pop up when you aren't expecting them tend to be much more impressive layers than the pools of celadon that have been kept and bred together for many, many generations. It's up to you whether you want to cross her onto a male from a known celadon line (maybe having some decline in vigour/egg size) or a regular male (probably more robust offspring but also you're going to have to aggressively backcross to mom to get more blue layers which can cause it's own problems).

My celadon are definitely not that color...probably a fluke you most likely not be able to replicate :(

So much inbred genes here...popeyes crossed beaks no eyes.

And ugh... I don't know if you saw but Lorena Bobbitt killed herself diving into a feeder hole. I've got 9 males (including the ones from you)and I think she was chased to death :hit:hit:hit
We are going to chop this weekend. If you can muster a trip so soon back you're welcome to come.

Oh no! Which one was that again?! Peewee or murderess?

All three of the ones I kept are boys too, so F this bullshit, that's too many dudes. D:

I actually have to drive right by you on my way to pick up my dog from folsom tomorrow and I'd be happy to help but idk when you'll be around.

Checked my notes and found out I'm a day late. Lock down tonight! Day 14 began. Potential popcorn on Saturday??? Gotta get the brooder assembled. I really don't want to butcher, but I should.

So chickens are taking a molt break. Eating more quail eggs. Very convenient. And tasty! If I keep this up, I will need 12 hens a laying.
I just locked down my Myshire assortment eggs.
Lockdown weights are to the left of the starting weights.
(Maybe one day I'll clean up these notes)
For now 24 are making it to lockdown. I only fake candled a handful of them when I took them out of the turner earlier.
I will candle them all again tonight.

Murderess :( :( :(
I might keep the silvery male you brought. He is so tiny and scared of everything. He flies when I chuck mealworms at him. Plus I think he and my sole lavender Manchurian baby (who I have decided is a girl because wishful thinking) would have super cool kids.
I'll revive our text idk what dr quail fancier is doing tomorrow
