➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

I'm having issues with chicks dying. Terrible time of it. How many do you lose from whatever reason? 2 got under the cardboard, no idea how. Determined? Another is looking poorly. Failure to thrive? Down to 30 from 33.
Dummies.

Is the food crushed up small enough?

I got to wondering if my two losses just might not have been getting to eat enough.
I slacked and only crushed up the food for the first two days.

I was wondering why they were wasting so much feed...flinging it every where this time. I think it's because the pieces were too big.
:hmm

my theory is that the blue inside is a celadon carrier but incomplete....but fyi if you ordered/received celadon....there is a higher probability that colors will not be feather-sexable.
Only part of the eggs i ordered are Celadon i have a batch thats coming in tomorrow that are not celadon. so those should be and then the other batch that is coming in tomorrow are the mishire farms sexlinked chicks so i will know those as soon as they hatch

we did the first round of the deed today.....took out 16 males! we should get our “certified” letter from the city tomorrow as missed first attempt today. plan is to take out more males tomorrow and possibly others depending on the details of the letter. :hit
I did it. FirstTime.jpg

Edit: I'm surprised that it only took me about 20 minutes. I had some help. The roommate held them still. I'm not sure I could have held them still enough by myself.

hatch update....i’ve had approximately 55/70 eggs hatch so far, I just removed 10 for-sure quitters, left 4 in for another 24-48 hrs as I had last hatch this evening. I’ve culled/lost about 10 chicks. need to clean brooder tomorrow so will get a fluffies head count then!!

yes i forgot to mention that myshire offers sex-link in my earlier post!! I hatched a batch earlier this year and got 7 males and 8 females!!! it was definitely cool knowing at hatch! moving forward, I’m most likely to hatch much smaller batches that I can “hide” in my shed until butcher time so i will probably go exclusively jumbo for that purpose.

That reminds me the roosters aren't super loud are they?

never underestimate a quail chick’s determination to commit suicide!! @RUNuts a 90% survival rate is actually really good!! I hope it stays that high for you! as stated in earlier update....I’ve lost/culled approximately 10 so far....pile-ups, splay legs, crooked neck, failure to thrive runts, overcrowding, food too big ????? and yes @Texas Kiki they make a much bigger mess of the brooder when food is not crushed!! (of course not all of us are as obsessive over cleaning constantly:barnie)
