➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

was this a homegrown egg?? or shipped? i’m really thinking german pastel or possibly mix of german pastel with a “brown” ......i’ve got some gorgeous brown colors out there and not really sure what color to call them. (they are mostly solid though not speckled)
They were shipped to me. None of the eggs that I set from my covey were fertile.

@muddy75 how do you collect eggs in this aviary? Do they just lay them on the ground and you hope nobody will step on them?

Can quail live on the ground instead of on wire? Like if I built a quail tractor or is that a stupid idea?
Mine are outside in moveable cages.
They are happier in the dust than grass.
How much space per quail? How tall should the cage be?
People here usually keep cages low so quail cannot develop wing muscles. Around 30-40cm max.

it is definitely a daily “easter egg” hunt!! i lose an egg or two occasionally that gets stepped on and or eaten. they mostly lay around the fence. there’s usually 4 or so in the feeder area, 1 next to the gate, 4 or so under the snowball bush, and 1 or more in each hideaway. it’s a little easier now that it was when they were giving me nearly 3 dozen per day!

@muddy75 My hens lay eggs in holes.. They dig a hole in the dust, lay the egg there and some start whistling. So if you have a dust hole.. even if you don't, if they can dig it in the ground, they may learn to lay eggs there? I am guessing.
@Bird nut 2000 see my post above. My experience (which is limited and by no means applicable for all cases) is that the females start laying eggs 2-3 weeks after the males start crowing. My hens usually start laying at day 42-55.
Kiki just had a new eggs at I think day 45, correct @Texas Kiki ? But her males do not crow (I am a bit jealous :)..
