Meh, this quail turner isn't as nice as I'd hoped. The holes are just too small. I watched last night while doing a test turn and even though the eggs fit in the holes, some of them weren't getting turned because they were right at the limit of what fit. I'll probably be going back to using the regular turner.

@FloorCandy if you do end up tweaking the design to be bigger and it works, let me know, I'll buy one from you.

Prepping the incubator -- planning to hatch 14 homegrown (7 celadon, 7 speckled) and 5 refrigerator eggs from the supermarket, total of 19. Homegrown eggs are between 1-10 days old. I don't know how old the refrigerator eggs are, but I think they were just put out by the supermarket today. They're from California, probably sent by refrigerator container ship.

I'm adding a twist by hatching just the "roundest" half of the speckled and also the refrigerator eggs. I want to see if there is a difference in M/F ratio. Farmers' tales die hard -- besides, I want to tell my mom one way or another because growing up she heard that the round eggs are female.

Crossing my fingers for a good hatch.

I tried the round vs pointed, it’s total bogus. My kids watched a video of some guy and his “ancient Chinese secrets”, so we tried it and they were a normal split of male and female. I told them it was fake, but kids think everything they see on YouTube is real and I needed to prove it. If this was reliable, hatcheries would charge extra for female eggs, and they would set all female eggs.

I'd be happy with 50/50 as long as I dont get more roos than hens!

Raising quail has been like one giant lab experiment. It will be interesting to see if supermarket eggs have any success hatching too.

Oh no! Truth is, I heard the pointy ones taste better and are more nutritious.

stupid weather!! I should’ve moved my babies to the shed brooder already but the shed is actually cold enough that my water jugs are freezing! So even though there is a plate and a lamp, it still a little risky. But I just cleaned the indoor brooder after I caught a baby just in time escaping.......evidently another baby and my severely crooked neck runt both escaped earlier and became doggie treats

Oh no! Tbh it was probably a humane end for the crooked runt. Knock on wood I haven’t lost any to the dogs. My female frenchie has a lot of game, and she’s chased bunnies and come back with tail fluff in her mouth haha. Too bad she can’t climb trees, the squirrels here are pretty brazen. I had a chick jump from my lap into my big bully’s mouth while he was yawning, and he spit it out unharmed. He was more surprised than the chick I think.

My pups (even my previous frenchie) are die-hard hunters! I was extremely lucky to save now 2 “suicidal brooder jumpers” I’ve covered it with a towel for now even though they are telling me how much they hate it! Hopefully I can move them sometime this weekend.
