2017 Gosling Hatch a long!!

Embdens will definitely take a day or two longer. Never had a gosling hatch at 28 days. 30-31 days is more typical. I use a still air styro incubator for hatching. At day 28, I will move over to that bator, then use a stethoscope to listen for clicking sounds. That is when internal pipping complete. Only after internal pipping will I raise humidity to 75%.

I am incubating in a Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance so will probably have to candle to check for internal pipping. I should be able to get my humidity up high enough with both channels filled and a paper towel wick, it was just deciding when.

Do you weigh to determine weight loss or do you go by the air cells? I've been weighing and they were losing too much but seem to be slowing up now. Air cells look ok I think but will check tomorrow properly as its day 21.

Also do you often assist them in hatching? I had a hands off approach with chickens but geese seem to struggle more from what I've read.

I think I have 2 of 6. I could see a bit of veining tonight. For sure on one and pretty positive on the other (this was the one that started it looking like a tiny red ring)

We will see. I really hope there's more than one that hatches.

Who knows? The others may show signs of life by day 7...We can only keep hoping! It's still early days...

While we're waiting, I got an order in for 25 assorted ducks. I lost 3 DOA and another 2 seem weak. My plan is to fall in love with a couple and sell the rest. I hope to break even, maybe even gain a little as I got them for $3.10 each. OMG the crested ones are so cute! I'll post pics later this evening if interested. We can try to guess the breeds lol. This is my first hatchery order. I'm hoping they give me credit for the losses, I'm sure they will.

Oh how lovely! I've always wanted ducks but hubby says it's already like a menagerie here ha ha!

Such a shame about the losses...I hope you can get a refund.

I breed Tufted Romans, the smallest domestic breed. Mine often hatch on day 28. What I do is just wait until I see dip down and lock down then. Most times that falls on day 25 or 26 for me. But being a smaller breed, that's why. The larger breeds definitely take longer.

At first, when I was buying shipped eggs, I was obsessive and followed Pete's hatching guide closely. I weighed eggs, I marked air cells with pencil lines, I candled all the time. I constantly monitored temp/humidity. I was lucky that Pete was a regular poster back then, too, so he also put up with a gazillion questions on my first couple hatches.

Now, my eggs are lucky to get turned 2x per day, and spritzed/candled once per week.

Same goes for assisting. I assisted Spirit (see signature line) and while I have no regrets with him, I would not do it again. The most I will assist now is if it has trouble zipping because it pipped in the wrong place.

Devastating news for my ducklings. 7 died throughout the night! I'm just sick about it. I've brooded before, but never a large amount. The heat is on and doing well, it's a 125 w red bulb most ducklings were spread out in the brooder. 3 appeared very wet so I'm thinking they got splashed and chilled. 2 were under the heat lamp and 2 were in the cooler side of the brooder. I thought I might lose 2 that seemed weak, but this is terrible. They were hatched 5-31 and made it to me 6-2 in the afternoon.

I made sure all were drinking well. I'm a bit heart sick.

My 3 good eggs are from a mixed flock but includes Embden, Toulouse, and white Chinese I think? So I'll wait for lockdown a few more days. When I see internal pip or on day 28?
