2022/2023 Emu Hatch-a-Long

Figured I'd start a thread for this season I have gotten two eggs so far and will be firing up the incubator soon. Who else is hatching this year?

Taking chances with eBay hatching eggs again. Chance for blonde or white. Don’t know why I do this… Then picking up this guy and one other in 4 weeks or so.

Baby emu hatched this morning!

It hasn’t really started walking yet, it scoots around the brooder and stands up a bit like in the below pic, but it doesn’t walk. Mostly just sleeps and cheeps back at me when I whistle or cheep at it. Is not walking normal for the first day?

I just got home to quite the surprise! There is a chick hatched and another on the way out. One is from the eggs that I thought might have frozen.

And finally taken today, the nest

This is the last we'll see this nest as Vladimir more than likely is brooding. Looking forward to this adventure. Let's hope it's a success!

So both nests hatched at the same time even though Vladimir had a 3 day head start!

Vladimir had both eggs hatch while I put the newest hatched chick's from the other male under Vladimir so that the male in nest 2 stays on his eggs without worrying about him leaving the nest to feed his babies. So far there are 6 chick's hatched and 3 of the 4 eggs left in nest 2 are all cheeping. The egg not cheeping I assume is the egg that was laid last which was 3 days after the second male started brooding!

Fingers crossed for 10 chick's!

I did some whistle testing on two of the eggs that are due the 28th. Both moved! Hoping for a good hatch - and no power outage during this storm, darn it!
