A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Congrats on new poults @duluthralphie.

I just moved 32 to hatcher 3 pipped already.
Missed most of the severe weather. Caught rain though. Just need it to dry up a bit. My chicken/turkey garden I put in their run is coming up nicely. So when I let them out later they should have a buffet.

I know this is highly improbable. But I have a trio of bourbons. Took 1 egg from day before out of box when I fed yesterday morning. No other eggs in pen or box. Went that night to get eggs and there was 3 eggs in the box. So one hen had to lay 2 in a day. Only thing I can think of is she didnt lay day before and egg was hung up. And then doubled up next day. :idunno

@R2elk. Do not look!!

Poor girls. Its impossible to take a proper dust bath with all this rain. And their poor little toes are getting muddy. They need a spa day. Heck...I need a spa day!
There are spas for dogs....alas, no spas that will take a turkey hen. I can so see Daisy enjoying a pedicure and neck & wing massage.

Awww... You need a hen spa! I see a niche market right there. lol

I see why people don't let turkeys raise poults :he
My original mama hen hatched 5/6. yesterday morning I found one dead outside of the coop. Last night I made sure they were all in with her, they were all there this morning. 2 hrs later one is missing and I have looked everywhere except where it is.
:barnie
I took 2 of the remaining 3 and gave them to another turkey hen that is locked up with poults hatched the same time. Maybe mama can keep track of 1 poult. :smack

I have 2 more turkey hens with eggs to hatch next week. Guess I better get building

I take poults away as soon as hatched for a couple of different reasons. First, it is much easier to show and sell poults that are in a brooder than ones that are hiding under a hen. Second is that there are just so many things that can go wrong during the first two weeks if the hen and her poults are in the general population.

I have given hens poults that are two weeks old and had them do fine in the general population other than it turns the hens into psychos trying to defend the poults from everything and every member of the flock.

I did let one hen raise her poults from day one last year but she was isolated from the general population for the first two weeks and I was not trying to sell any of them.

yes last year I had blocked off the end of the coop after she killed a chick. This year she was tolerant of the chicken hens that came to lay and no chicks in that coop...there is another turkey hen sitting on eggs there. I didn't look under her, and not going to... maybe the poult is there. They have been snuggling with her, but it has been several hours the poult has been missing.
She did go psycho when I moved the first poult and she could hear it. The dog came by to see what I was looking for...She jumped the fence on top of the dog. Fortunately the dog while confused, didn't chomp on her.
