Memphis - About 4 years ago, I had a really big snowstorm here. My main fence around the property is an old 3-foot tall chainlink. The snow was up or over it, depending on the location around the yard. Snow had blown into 5-6 foot drifts and the snowplows made them even larger. On top, we also had a major 4-inch crust of ice due to an ice storm followed by a sleet storm. That snow was on the ground for a month at the very least.
None of the squirrels were apparently able to find enough food - to the point they were eating "berry-like" pods off my pear trees. So I was making food for them out of chicken feed and anything else I could find in the freezer and pantry - and according to what search results said they would eat. I went out and got on top of some of the drifts and hung up milk jugs with bungee cords - side cut out and filled with food. I did see squirrels eating it.
When spring finally showed up, I noticed there were very few squirrels. The next two years - I saw NONE - not a single one. Nor did I see any chipmunks - also gone and STILL gone. Where that tree fell is a patch of woods that borders me - and my property line goes into it for about 20 feet, I guess. I have been here for 20 years and there were always squirrels and chipmunks running through the yard - even eating my strawberries.
It's only been in the past week that I have seen 3 - all small young ones, so obviously there are adults. Two of them were 2 miles away from my place. The one in the pic is the ONLY one I have seen all summer.
Btw, when that snow finally melted, I realized those feeders I had put up - were unreachable. 10 feet or so up the side of the tree. I guess it's a good thing the ice was on top of that mess - or no one would have found me before the snow disappeared!
