A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

For those of you that free range/just let your turks run around how do you keep them on the property and/or from running away?

For me it is not how do I keep them from running away, it is how do I get them more than 50 ft from the house?

My free range turkeys do not go very far during the day, Most go less than 100 ft. They are lazy and want to be where all the people are.

My two hens stay pretty close. They figured out where MY coop is so now they fly over the gate & roost on the back porch rail. That way they can spy on me by looking in the back door. Little bit creepy.
Are ya'alls hens still laying? I keep finding eggs everywhere.

I have not had an egg in over a month, maybe 6 weeks, but it is getting chilly here and the days shorter.

I got this la ge dog kennel yesterday to keep her away from the others.
Even the turkey was chasing her.
Not sure how she got the injury, but I suspect once she was injured, everyone else started picking on her.
I'm using neosporin ointment on the wound. It's scabbing but not closing yet. She doesn't like being confined, but I think she likes having her own food and not sharing.

Glad Cha is going to make it.

I use 2 of those large cages for different things. They work well.

I have one loaded with guineas right now.

My Blue hen with the creamette chicks got injured today. She tore away all the skin from her left wing down to her right leg across the breast. I think she got hung up on something acting nuts because I took her chicks away yesterday. She wanted in the run they were in. That could not happen as she was going to kill the adult Creamettes.

I have had birds die after a couple weeks from lessor wounds. I decided to bite the bullet and process her. I have a couple good looking young blues for her for next years hatch. I really hate to lose her, but she was not a pet, she was a production bird. I just hate killing a proven breeder.

On the good side her meat looks great after I trimmed the injured area away. Now we just have to figure who to invite over and help eat her.
