Ameraucana Projects Thread

Butchered some cockerels from the barring project . I have been getting some good leg color and this shows the inner layer of color . I scalded and peeled off the top layer . From left white inner layer and toes I left on outer layer . The rest have slate inner layer and set 3 the toes have outer layer on . Some spotting on inner layer . So with 2 layers of slate or black pigment results in better color .

I've had a terrible time finding wheaten Ameraucana bantams, but this pair showed up in an order of bantam ee's from Cackle this year. The male looks to be lavender based to me, what do you think? The female is so washed out I'm having trouble telling, plus she has the wrong color legs. ... But could be fun to hatch from next year, couldn't they? Any chance of moving in the direction of lavender wheaten with this pair? I also have access to lavender bantams I could pair with the cockerel.

They are about seven weeks in this photo, both have nice beards, just wet here.

They are both EE.

Lavender Wheaten Ams would be a LONG project. Both are recessive genes and you will have to get both to express. You first cross would be split for wheaten and lavender. If you cross those to each other IDK how to figure the odds of getting both to express in one bird. 1 in 8 maybe????? Then you would have to work them back to breeding true.

I thought about that project several years ago. Then when I figured out how hard it was i didn't want to put that kind of time into them. Someone on BYC has been working on them for several years. If I were you and wanted to work on this project I would see if I could find some birds that would give you a jump start.

That person would be me...yes it is a very long process. I posted all the genetics and pictures on my page somewhere on byc. I have nothing to offer. Everything is either molting or to young to lay :/

Yes, of course they are EE. However, they must still have a genotype for their color. Is the boy blue splash based, or lavender based? John Blehm had a solid relationship with Cackle where these birds are from and I strongly suspect their EE'S come from his project and Cull pens which include plenty of lavender, so it's not outside the realm of possibility. Also, watching their videos of breeding stock there are clearly a lot of wheaten looking hens. It's really kind of irrelevant as I won't be working on this to show or be accepted, and I'm certainly not interested in purchasing other stock, just wondering if anyone could ID the color at this stage for me.

Now all that being said, I would love to read up on anything available on making this color.
