I'm Brandon from Kailua, O`ahu. I've been lurking on this thread for a while, but somehow thought I introduced myself. I guess not. Maybe it was another Hawaii thread.
I raise Cochin bantams. I bought a white cochin pair from Ko`olau Pets in Kane`ohe back in 2011 (PS They're a huge rip off, although I was surprised they sold me the pair for $10/each). Once the male started to crow, we had to get rid of him. We gave him to Kane`ohe Farm Supply. Our female started to crow soon afterwards, but once she started to lay eggs(10 months old, really late but not uncommon for bantam cochins), the crowing disappeared. She was a spoiled house chicken - went everywhere with us, and slept in the room, in a basket on our bed. In 2012, we placed an order for bantam cochins through Ideal. I've always ordered through them, and love their stock. We got 5 each of the Gold Laced, Red, Buff, Birchen, and Mottled. Since we cant have roosters, we kept one hen from each color, and sold the rest on Craigslist. All 6 of them are on my avatar. Early last year, I bought some cochin hatching eggs off eBay. Two of my girls went broody and hatched out 5 babies. Cats got to 3 of the chicks, and we ended up with 2 roosters - blue & blue mottled. Both got sold on Craigslist, and I bought another batch of eggs from eBay. The USDA got involved, and I almost lost my entire flock to quarantine. I was able to prove to the USDA that the eggs came from a certified flock, so they let me go with a warning. If I'm ever caught importing eggs without a permit, I would have to pay a fine of up to $2,000. SO BE CAREFUL BRINGING IN EGGS EVERYONE!!! Anyway, 3 eggs hatched and I ended up with 2 roosters (Black Gold and Blue Gold) and a lovely Calico hen. The Black Gold got sold to a lady, and the blue gold stayed with me for a long time. We bought the No-Crow rooster collar from MyPetChicken, but it didn't work so well. I made my own with those one-strap velcro straps. It worked to a point where it muffled his crow, but he still crowed A LOT! It also prevented him from swallowing anything larger than chicken feed crumbles. Tablescraps got lodged in his neck, so if we werent careful he woulda died. We ended up giving him away because the crowing got too excessive, and it was tough bringing him in the house every night so he wouldnt see the sun come up. Last month we bought a pair of Partridge Cochin bantams, and cant wait til they get older. I'm hoping the male gets older soon so we can start to have babies!
BTW - looking for bantam ameraucanas. NOT EASTER EGGERS. If anyone knows of anyone who can bring eggs in with a permit, Id love to contact them!
I have true araucanas, but breeding is slow since the roo lives in Lanikai and only visits for a day or two. I have a black DT rooster coming up. Sometimes they breed before they crow and hopefully you can get a batch before you have to get rid of the roo. The eggs are not as blue as my cream legbars though.
I too use the homemade version of the rooster collar with limited success. It at least slows them down.
Maybe your girls can visit one of the roosters you got rid of, if you saved the number.
