Anyone have fish?

Pics
I think I read somewhere 40 gallons for the first goldfish and 30 for each one after?? So they would need 130 gallons minimum? But idk. Maybe in ponds it's different. I've also heard 1 gallon for each inch of fish but idk if that's for smaller tropical fish.

Not sure on the water parameters because I haven't checked it in a while but I can say I let evaporate quite a bit for the first time ever because I got extremely busy and also couldn't access the tank because of how much stuff was in front of it which I know is no excuse but I just changed the water, filled it all the way up again, and changed the filter, so the water I think should be healthy again??? But I think I need to change the water again at least partly. I should be doing it daily with the size of the tank, right? I think I'm going to go buy a bigger tank tomorrow.

Oh and I've heard about stunting in bowls and how it's a serious problem and cruel but I didn't realize it could happen in tanks. It makes sense though if I don't upgrade the tank as they grow

I do water changes every 7-10 days. With goldfish I like to do 50-90 %.

With outdoor ponds, you want something deep enough where raccoons couldn't get the fish.

When was the last time you changed the water? When you let the water evaporate, the ammonia the fish produce doesn't evaporate with it, so the ammonia concentration gets stronger, and the water gets worse. I can tell just by looking at those pictures, that you don't have enough filtration, so you should be doing several water changes per week to make up for that lack of filtration.

Stunting is caused by poor water quality, and that can happen in a tank or a bowl.

Yeah, I'm thinking of making it like 2 or 3 feet deep, at least in part of it.

And yeah I know the water gets worse which is why I felt bad for letting it get like that but it wasn't like that for long cause as soon as I was able to change it I did. And I just changed it on Sunday.

And wait I need more than one filter? For a tank that small?

And ohh that makes sense

Yeah, it's more about the bioload. So the bioload is much higher in a small tank with lots of fish producing ammonia than a bigger tank with less fish.

Ohhh that makes sense. And the goldfish are definitely messier than most fish.

Also I just checked and it's a Whisper 10-30i so maybe it's just not a big enough filter? Maybe I just need to upgrade the size rather than add a second one?

Thanks for the help

That filter is way too small for that amount of fish. You could get a bigger tank and keep the filter, but the fish would be producing the same amount of ammonia, it would just be less concentrated with the larger water volume, but any amount of ammonia is bad for fish. Ammonia should stay at 0 PPM. Get a bigger tank, and a better filter. A good filter would be an AquaClear 110. Goldfish should have a filter that's rated at least double their tank size even when the tank isn't overstocked, and yours is. Look on Craigslist for a 55 gallon tank, you should be able to find a good deal. They also have 55s at the Petco dollar per gallon sale.

Thanks! I'll have to look for that filter and a bigger tank and/or build the pond. Or maybe find a stock tank for now
