I can't get close to the other chickens. Someone we know w chickens said "They want everything to do with you, and nothing to do with you!" Haha, and that's what it seems like. They'll follow me everywhere when I go out, but the minute I try to pet one or get close, they're like "Noo...I don't think so!" LOL
Well, except for recently...some will run right in front of me, squat down and spread their wings and let me scratch their back & butt! Then they fluff all out and walk away and want nothing more to do with me, haha.[/QUOTE]

Ha ha..funny story. Years ago..i used to watch my chicken community..thier social life is facinating..my roos would scratch and cluck..hens would come a running and get a juicy treat..but occasionally..they would scratch..cluck..a hen woukd run over and he'd give them more than a treat!!! so..i sort do the same thingy..i call them and give them a snack ..but on occasion..i call them..and snatch one up..he he..rooster psycology!

Never apologize for....writing too much or writing randomly. You are putting words to thoughts that are going every which way to save an animal. Thats what we are here for to be the calm and offer advice. Everybody has given great advice. My rooster was in a battle and I thought he lost an eye...had it closed for 3 days and then I saw a slit and knew he was going to keep the eye. You're doing a great job!

They tend to become less skittish and more friendly/demanding of treats once they get to this point. A little more confident in themselves and used to your routines. Probably is mostly due to their hormones settling down once they start laying.

I bet she enjoyed some fresh air! Chickens make all types of sounds/clucks. They do have a soft cluck when they r content..another soft one for chicks..and more of a screech when alarmed..and a loud squawk when they sense danger, etc. Ur girl looks better, ur a good momma...chickens r pretty darn tuff...she'll do just fine with one eye...probly will tilt her head a lot when just using one eye...the brain/nervous system is miraculus..and will adjust its resources to accommodate one eye. I've noticed when my birds look up at a flying bird or airplane..they oftentimes tilt thier heads and use one eye..so..she will b fine

Here's one of my newky hatched malasian serama chicks..the egg was 1/3 the size of a regular egg...it is so tiny. I forgot to tell u...i personally would not eat the egg while ur hen is on all those meds/antibiotics. Boil it..choppe it up real good and give it to her.

I will try that with her egg! It sounds so...wrong/cannibalistic when you first hear it! LOL

Squirrels, weasels, raccoons get their hands into anything they are strong enough to bring it all down. I get cut every time I use hardware cloth but I smile because I know a raccoon is getting cut too.....if he tries. I had rabbits and we didn't get the hardware cloth onto the dog kennel right away....big mistake....a raccoon came and pulled the chain link apart with his hands, walked in, opened two cages and pulled the rabbits out and killed them. So my metal store knows to keep hardware cloth stocked. Like that saying goes for Franks Hot Sauce...."I use that "S**t (hardware cloth) on EVERYTHING"!
It actually sounds like you've got a good coop there. As long as there is enough room for the chickens. They will bundle together during the winter. But make sure every hole, even vent holes or a small slit between roof and wall are covered. Great job.

Wow! I've seen several people say that about raccoons (and others)being able to tear stuff apart and open things, it's crazy they're so strong and smart.

I'm so sorry about your rabbits.

I never heard that about Frank's, but my boys would certainly agree, they pour it over everything!

Even just scrambled like you make for yourself is real good when you want to baby them a bit. No reason they can't eat raw either - I just dont, too messy.

Regular chicken wire is not quite enough as @Leighe pointed out. The chickens can put their heads thru and the raccoon grabs and pulls. I think the raccoons somehow entice them. Also sometimes a big raccoon can tear the chicken wire, dogs too. Best to add hardware cloth to a height of three ft or so if you can.

Every chicken is different and also the time you spend with them when they are chicks makes a difference. There are people on this site who can pick up every hen and rooster in their flock because they've done it for years and then there are those, like me, who never touch but let them live their chicken life and then when we have to get one because it's hurt we have to go in at night or early in the morning, or if its an emergency we run after it. Having said that, my rooster, who has never been held by me, was bullied by a new rooster I brought in (I no longer have that rooster) and I had to take my rooster to the vet. It was like he knew I was there to help and every single staff person in the vet office, came into the exam room while we were there, to see "this rooster I heard just stands quietly"....and that's what he did. He stood on the exam table quietly and let them handle him looking at his injuries and let me hold him whilst they gave him meds. He then allowed us to give him meds for the next week and then he was done with his meds. I always call my rooster's name when I go out with treats. I don't care how many hens are around and if he's not around. I call his name and look for him to arrive before I hand out treats. He knows he's top cock around here, lol.

I was trying to keep myself distanced from this whole
'chicken experiment', in order to make sure my son knew it was All him, but...I couldn't leave him on his own with this, and now we've named her...smh...it's all over, haha.
Anyway, that's why I didn't really have much interaction with them as chicks and they'll go to my son sooner than they will me.

I think you're the first person I've seen that actually likes their rooster, hahaha!

Personally, I believe animals do know when we're trying to help them. I've found injured wild animals that have acted similarly, and you can see it often in fb & youtube videos now-a-days.
