Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Looks like my Pekin Esme has gone clucky for the first time, and boy is she a serious clucky! Very cranky, and she was on three eggs (all todays, but she laid hers at six this morning, then must have rolled the others under her. She's a sweet, friendly girl, but the broody hormones have certainly unleashed the beast within! I kicked her out of the nest and she's fine. Agnes is ok too, on eye drops atm, see how they go. May need further investigation if they don't help clear up a suspected local (eye only) infection.

edit: Make that TWO first time broodies, Beatrice my D'Uccle is also broody. This'll be such fun

hi all. I have been actively keeping up to date with everyone's post but nothing to add - until now that is. I am curious to know if I mate a Blue Birchen Marans rooster over a Wheaton Marans hen will the chicks be sexed linked? I have tried reading up on the whole sex linking thing but get so confused. The couple I've had hatch so far seem to be indicating they may be sex linked with the blue chicks showing boy characteristics, but they are only a few weeks old.

They will be sex linked colours, not sure what the chicks would be like but you should get silver neck birchen hens in blue or black and yellow/gold neck birchen roosters in blue or black , unless the birds have other colour genetics.

Are you hatching or breaking them?
I thought that bubble was going broody today as she went and collected all the eggs into a single pile from where everyone else had laid.
But after that she just laid and egg and wandered off. I guess she was just tidying up.

Good morning folks

Got a little bit of catching up to do

appps we basically have Foxtel for one reason, the Footy Channel! We also do not watch a great deal of television and listen to the radio most of the day. But it is nice to flop into the recliner at the end of the day and watch TV for an hour or so before bed. If there is nothing else, we can always rely on an NCIS episode .. no such thing as too much Leroy Jethro Gibbs!

Fizzybelle how is Agnes’ eye? Aaaah, the joys of having broodies [not! lol]. Cilla has laid 5 eggs since the return to laying, 5 more to go and I will probably have a broody also

kat79 sorry to read about your egg dilemma.

Anniebee many thanks for the additional info on Chucky. He continues to visit daily.

Hey MullyAly sorry, I am not able to answer your question.

Not much news of note.

A friend on Facebook posted a link to ‘How to grow avocados from seed in pots’ which got me to thinking I should take an updated picture of my two; Arnie and Danny [yep, even the trees have names here! lol]

Baby Arnie

Baby Danny

Arnie on the left is 4 years old this month and Danny on the right is 3 years and 3 months. Danny looks a bit droopy because today is watering day. I do not hold out much hope of getting fruit from them but I still love them

Hi all, I have only had one triple yolker and that was over a year ago. My young goose has given me two double yolkers. I was checking her nest before she sat, as the chooks and ducks like to visit and contribute at times. Twice in one week I found really long eggs and checked them out to see a double. They are now in the fridge. She is sitting now along with 2 other geese and 3 ducks. Not in the same nest of course. ;)

Nice trees. Only 4 more years until they should flower for the first time.

I'll be breaking them. No hatching, I'd like to one day, but not now. They actually both laid eggs yesterday, then went broody afterwards.

Little Agnes is off the the vets at Manly rd, as their is an avian vet there and an eye specialist. Hasn't really been much of an improvement, but I will continue with the drops she has until she sees the new vet. She's otherwise totally fine, eating, playing (and yelling).

Heheh, I'm sure you'll have your own broody problems very soon too

It's contagious around here apparently, fingers crossed I don't get another clucky.

If you have a bugie or parrot type cage with a wire bottom available they are great for breaking Broodies. I would actually be happy with a broody again at the minute as we got 7 eggs yesterday and I don't have a use for many in my current situation. On the plus side if that keeps up I'll have a full load for the incubator as soon as I start the move into a house again in late October.

Oh she is precious! Congrats Sweetbeak, and a potential olive egger too? Very nice :)

I generally lock them out of the nest box during the day, let them go about their normal routine, then put them in a milk crate to sleep at night, that's elevated on some bricks to ensure good airflow underneath. It's worked well for my silkie Agnes so far, but if not, I'll look into picking up an old bird cage. Had a little kerfuffle just now with the nests being hogged by Esme and Bea, poor Agnes needed to actually use one to lay an egg, so I kicked them out. Once she was done though, Bea made a break for the nests whilst open, and the egg Aggie left behind

Gotta admire that broody determination. Keep us updated when you put your eggs in the incubator, what are you planning on hatching?
