Well, they say we got 1.4 this morning. No idea how they figure that. Two spits & a spat about 5ish when I let the chooks out. No thunderstorms. Nothing. We are sooo dry!

Hi everyone, I've been a bit busy. I hope everyone is coping with the weather wherever they are and hopefully no more fires. I read somewhere that someone recommended apple cider vinegar, I'm not sure if you are supposed to give that to chooks when its hot. It might be worth finding out before you do it. For mites and fleas I use coopex and diatomaceous earth and clean the coop thoroughly. I keep the chooks out till its dry. Good luck. At the moment we have stick fast fleas they are the worst things ever, so hard to get rid of. I welcome any ideas.

I use lime. All around the gardens, rock walls, concrete and timber. Never killed a chook and made yard flea and tick free. Never had lice or mites come to think of that. Every year will have a day putting it around. Never put it on straight, let your chooks roll in the dirt with it in. Good to make dogs flea and tick free as well.

iv'e just had a bad dose of them too. I sprayed woolies surface spray under their wings and in the nest boxes. (changed bedding) twice a week for a few weeks and they are all gone.

Is it possible to buy grain in CARDBOARD or PAPER bags?
I have made a feed plan for my flock but I'm having trouble with the grains. I need Whole Wheat, Whole oats, and cracked/whole corn.
My local-ish produce store sells all the grains,
Hard Wheat 25kg $.22.50
whole oat 25kg $.23.50
cracked corn 25kg $.26.50
75kg = $.72.50
Which is a very good price for value, but it is in large plastic bags and I am trying to reduce the waste(or waste altogether) from the farm.
Any company/mill suggestions? I am on the Southcoast NSW.

Can I ask why you are making your own feed? Most produce stores sell feed that has
been designed for layers & it's reasonably priced. My breeder also told me to go easy on the cracked corn as it puts the weight on, was low in nutrition, & because the birds love it they will pick it out meaning their diet becomes unbalanced. Just asking.

This is what I use. It's reasonably priced & lasts me 4~6 weeks for 4 birds.

Hey here’s NSW buddy! I’m also in NSW. I just buy red hen layer mix I have over 40 birds and can’t any other stuff

Yeah. My breeder uses it & explained why. It's a pain because I can't get it on the island & have to lug it on the boat from the mainland.
