Hi. Chet & Berta. sorry it took so long to get back to you. we have 30 members now most are on our face book page. I,am working on the first newsletter right now. I sent in to the APA membership dues for the club. I'm over my treatments and feeling better. My first show of the year was last sat. I made it to champion row with a cockerel. the judge was Pat Malone. He liked my bantams. I'll send you a copy of the newsletter soon. Maggie

Hi Ross,
I'm a bit late on this, but I'd just like to say "nice boy". I'm sure lots of us would be interested in your critique of the bird. I know it's hard when it's your bird and they rarely pose 'good' for pics, but what do you see as the strengths and weaknesses? Just from the pic, are the comb points a little uneven? Is the back just a tad short? Is the tail carriage a tad low? Please don't take this as a putdown of the bird, Ross. I'd love him! Just trying to learn how to pick between 'gooduns'!
Cheers Geoff

G'day Geoff,

That fowl was almost impossible to get a good picture because he is one of those characters who simply won't stand still, despite hours and hours of training. Yes, the comb points are fractionally uneven and even one spike has an ever so slight bend, but even some good judges never picked it. It's a minor fault that isn't a worry. I'm happy with his backline and he is beautifully balanced.

I took him to Poultry 2012 Canberra and he never got placed, but I still sold him for a very high price. Had he not been sold, I would have bred with him. The judge told me everytime he placed the Judging Stick near him he moved well away and wouldn't show. That is exactly what he did here, so I just got him to stand by hand.

His father was a great show fowl and I have retained a full brother to him who bred most of my chickens for 2012. The drama I have is that because of my hospitalisation I bred them very late, and I just hope that they will be ready for the Titles at Dubbo in June. Dubbo would be a good break for you to go to a top show. Many from Victoria are entering.

That year I judged the Victorian Australorp Titles, the cockerel I placed third belonged to the owner of that fowl on the APS book and on your av picture. The same owner got 1, 2 and 4 with his pullets. The cockerels that were placed 1, 2 and 4 were all owned the one breeder. That was one of the hardest jobs I ever had to judge because not only were there record entries, but they had them spread all over the bloody place. Instead of, for example, an owner have his birds in pens 27, 28, 29 and 30, they were in pens 27, 33, 43, and 56. So you had to chase all over the show sheds to get the top birds. So to finish up with accurate judging made me pretty pleased. Somewhere I have a picture of me and the winning owner, but I come up pretty ugly in a picture.

When you decide the show your fowls and want to get competitive, drive up here and pick a trio out and get fair dunkum with some good lines. If you're keen enough to drive from Victoria, you'll get them right. I know one of the exhibitors from Victoria to Dubbo is coming back to my farm in Qld to buy a trio of Bantams. It's a long trip.

Regards,

Ross

G'day Chester,

I've emailed Maggie and I'll approach the Australorp Club in Australia here for some sashes for the new club in the USA for their first show. I can't promise if they'll do it, but I'll sure as hell try.

Regards,

Ross

Geoff, the book arrived a week ago. I thought I sent you a message, but I am usually on late at night so it is possible that I need sent it. Thank you so much. Rays book is a wealth of knowledge, an there are many helpful tidbits in it.

GWA,
If that were possible we would all be doing it. Vent sexing is about the only way and you need alot of experience. Do a search on vent sexing, but be careful. It takes me about 5 to 6 weeks to be pretty sure with BA's. If you check out my profile you can see the different development from day olds and then every two weeks. I will be posting 8 week olds today. Check out my picture album for details when you blow them up.

Hey y'all,
The TigerCreek 5 are now 8 weeks old and ready for their photo shoot! You can definitely see the 3 cockerels now and the 2 pullets. I don't remember who won the pool, but it was not me.

Nice birds!

Hello Kurt.
Your BA's look marvelous. Very pretty shapes overall.

Hey... doesn't it appear that the chicks that had the bit of white on their face or eye area turned out to be cockerels... or am I mistaken?
When I choose my chicks soon I think I will avoid those just in case.
