Australorps breed Thread

Cool ! Great for Newbies !
So why Grams verses ounces ? is grams more accurate ? Or ?
My Rode Island Red ( shes 1 1/2 years old ) laid a huge egg today even though she is moulting ..4 oz ...113.40 grams ? My scale only does ounces
It looks like 2 whole eggs it is so big ...Ouch ! Cant wait to crack it open ..
The egg grading chart I have goes by Grams.

Thanks Ron.
Yum! I don't make sourdough bread myself but we do purchase it from a local bakery each week.
Wondering if your starter is from the original 1847 the old west? I had no idea what "Oregon Sourdough" was so did a quick search & came up with that. Love to learn new stuff.

Happy baking. ~Dee~
Yes, the sourdough starter goes back to 1847 and maybe older too. I sent a stamped self addressed envelope to the volunteers that send starter out to folks and a week later I had mine going too.

It is really good starter.

Is it worth keeping a hen if she has some purple some purple barring on her?
It depends on what you need to fix in your flock and if you are working to improve them for showing.

Purple and barring are bad but she should still make a great addition to a layer flock.

Grams are used by most foreign country's, besides the U.S who use ounces. Kinda like how we use Pounds other country's use Kilos.

No, neither the barring nor the purple sheen are acceptable and should be culled if you are breeding black australorps. The real question is where did these faults or DQ's come from?
Kurt
I would like to see some pictures to see exactly what the barring and purple look like. We also do not know how old the hen is.
