Australorps breed Thread

@Gramma Chick I got them at 8 weeks old from someone that had two pullets and two cockerals for sale, supposedly. The two cockerals were obvious then so we thought for awhile we had girls. *sigh*

I totally understand your frustration. I bought what I was told were two pullets by an experienced breeder last year that assured me they were girls. Turns out they were just late developing roos because they were loaded with worms and one had cocci.

Fortunately, I was able to get them both healthy (one was so sick his crowing was set back til he was over 6 mo. old) and find them both great homes.

lightchick, I suspect they use the squeeze method, then they might look at comb placement. Reading through this thread, you will find that there seems to be quite a bit of hit-and-miss with this particular breed.

Vent sexing.
Save my chickens from random squeezing....what's the "squeeze method"?
The chick is squeezed and the vent is examined. With training and experience, they can be 95% accurate.

Hatcheries use vent sexing, but it isn't easy to do and can vary by breed. Hatcheries employ professionals whose sole jobs are to look at chick butts all day. It isn't recommended if you don't know what you're doing.
