Aviary going up!

This looks so great! I have a similar set up but yours is much more aesthetically pleasing :)
The roof on mine doesn’t really overhang like yours, and where the deep litter gets wet it kind of gets crust and I have to take it to break it up. But the quails seem to love the litter!

Happy to hear that your quail love deep litter. I hope the overhang is enough on this one, but in my climate I'm more worried about snow than rain. Fingers crossed the roof holds through the winter!

I think it looks amazing, I plan on building an Aviary for my pheasants in the next couple of weeks, they are only 3 weeks old right now. I will definitely be using your design.

Thanks! Mine probably isn't big enough for pheasants, but I don't see why it couldn't be scaled up (especially if you have better framing technique than I do :D).

I agree it will have to be bigger for my pheasants but the layout is what I want mine to look like, and yes I do a lot of carpentry work. I just took a metal bunk bed and made it into a brooder for my 3-week old chicks the other day. I kept the price down by using wood and stuff I already had on hand. Still, have to finish the roof on it I need to raise it at a better slant and turn the board and add another board then tar paper it and shingles it before the rain comes next week. That's got to be finished first before I start the Aviary.

We will also have plenty of snow in the winter. I need to build a suitable shelter for them by then to get out of the cold wind and snow. Right now they have an upside down cardboard box lol.
My roof is just about flush with the walls, and I would have liked it to be longer. But we had a sheet of fibreglass we were trying to make work and it was only so big...

A cardboard box was my plan, too, but I wound up with more offcuts than I thought I'd have => scrap shelter! Nothing wrong with working with what you have.

I like your aviary and am considering doing the same to house my quail and possibly my 2 parakeets. I just don't know if I have the time/energy now that it's getting hot, so it may be my fall project.

If you all haven't seen this blog, she has good information on quail and plans for houses and pens.

It being summer was definitely an issue in getting it together. Sunscreen and the right clothes can only do so much before the sun chases you inside. If I hadn't started incubating the eggs when I did, Fall would have been a more pleasant time to start.

Thanks for the blog link. I'm going to have to build something like her "quail shelters" if I want my birds to stay cool.

Well, the main structure is finished. I could put them out now if I wasn't worried about diggers getting to them. The hardware cloth skirt will go on as soon as I can get some gravel delivered. Then it's time to fill it with logs and plants and such. Almost ready for quail!
