Muscovy's are great fliers, I am not sure if Opie could fly since he does like to eat. But remember in the wild they aren't eating like they do when living with someone so they are slimmer.

Opie doesn't mind a bit if you pick him up and love on him or scratch his chest. he is very easy to handle and I think it is mainly because he was raised inside. He has always thought of dh and I as his mama's.

Are they common in the wild? I can't remember ever seeing one other than on the Internet and and poultry shows.

In parts of the country there are large feral groups of Muscovy's where they are considered a nusiance [sp] and are eradicated sometimes not sure how often anymore but not too many years ago Ocala Fl killed a large population at one of their parks. the only place they are protected is Texas because they are considered migratory there. Most feral are from either dumped or flying off from their homes. I know one lady here who lost alot of her Muscovy's because they flew off to the river. They love to fly. That is why I clip one wing on my females. and use to clip my young drakes too.

The store that I'm going to get the new chicks from advertise on their website that they carry both EEs and Ameraucanas but you needed to check store availability for the breeds available at your local store, the closest store said no EEs but they did have Ameraucanas, so maybe you're right Patty that they're just labeled wrong. I guess it really doesn't matter what they turn out to be though, as long as they're nice to the others I'll be happy with them. Both breeds look almost the same anyways and either one comes with muffs and colorful eggs so I'll be happy! 

I love when they're tiny and climb all over you, ours did that when they were babies. We put them in those plastic kiddie pools and put chicken wire around it so they can't fly out, or so we thought, (keep in mind the chicken wire is at least three feet tall) and I come out one day to check on them and here comes one flying out and over the fence into my hands at just a few weeks old! We had to put a chicken wire top over it after that, because once one does it it's a competition to see who can go higher. I hope we can earn the trust and love of the new ones, I'm gonna be holding them alot to make them sweet. 

Eeeee, little tiny flying chicken chicks. I'd kiss every single one. Silly little babies.

that makes sense about being slimmer out in the wild than if they are a house type duck who gets fed regularly. I am glad Opie doesn't fly. He has too many responsibilities with his girls at home to be off flying somewhere.

That is cute he lets you handle him. And that he thought of you and dh as his mamas. Nice bonding experience.

My one Suzie tries every day to convince me to leave that one egg I don't, and my other 2 are still sitting on nothing it has to run it's course here Muscovy's do not give up.

i am amazed that the 4 roos that hatched this year are still getting along so well and my game bantam roo Rufus is so tolerant of them. I am thinking now i will keep the one roo that is shaped more like the Cochin, but I tell ya I really like them all They have turned out to be good boys[so far] .Makes it even harder to think about what is to come.

Suzie knows you are practicing zero population growth but she would sure like to sneak in just one baby. The Muscovy's must be like the silkie chickens born to be broody.

You still have the 4 roos. Thats amazing they all get a long togeather. If I had that many roos togeather they would be fighting like crazy. They must be a sweet natured breed.

That is so sweet that Opie still thinks of you as his momma. I told Que Sera when she was being snooty and not letting me come near her, I am your mom I helped you out of your egg. She doesn't pay any attention to that she just walks off. She does eat out of my hand but that's as close as I can get without chasing her and catching her.

We are all doing ok. The chickens and the ducks aren't liking this 90+ weather we have been having. The ducks lay in the shade and pant or sit in the pool. The chickens have a big fan running in the coop but most of them prefer to be outside. Coach is doing ok he shows Phyllis the food bowl and god knows she needs the help to find it. Phyllis either hangs out with Coach in the coop or visits with Jr. in his cage.

How are you all doing Deb ? Are you enjoying your pool? How's your ducks doing? We havn't seen any pics of them lately. Maybe I can get Rob to take some pics today and I'll post some.
