Big Ag and CNN are at it again

But what do they have to do with that article? You really think they're the ones behind it or something?
Conspiracy theory? To me it looks like the CDC was responsible for it and that's the kinda stuff they do.
Im aware of Tyson chicken farmers and I'm aware of the egg industry. They're all making their own choices of how they want to make their living and this is America so I support them in being able to choose their path in life.
I don't have to agree with them or support their buisnesses or live downstream from them but i have that freedom.
To each their own. As a society we're always wanting to be in others business and wanting others to share our beliefs and values.
Life's too short and I'm enjoying it too much to subscribe to that way of thinking.

I was driving down the road, and picked up a nail in my tire. It went flat. So I blame the CDC, or
CNN for not reporting that hazardous nails location!.

It sounds like the CDC put out some statistics, like they're supposed to do, and some reporter wrote a badly-researched and badly-edited ("digestive track?" Really?) non-story about it.
I'm not saying the article is part of a "big-Ag conspiracy theory" but it does seem to be subtly designed to discourage newbies. The reality is that if identical CDC statistics and the exact same information were part of an article that was slightly differently-worded with the point of view that "raising your own farm animals for food is healthy and rewarding, as long as you practice certain hygiene precautions," a bunch of factory farm companies would be up in arms and threatening to pull their advertising.

Perhaps one of the goals is to discourage people from thinking that chickens are a little more than egg producing machines. Those of us who actually spend time with our birds quickly learn they all have their own quirky personalities and they do remember things. They also deserve a better quality of life than what big producers think is good enough for livestock. Oh, and the only time I got salmonella was from a cute little box turtle. My whole family including the dogs got sick. I think I'll go wash my hands now.

I think all a person needs to do is read through the threads here and the article makes sense. No shocker that the cases are much higher than the last time I saw a similar article, lots of newbies to chicken keeping.

I helped my sister order some chicks online from McMurray Hatchery this afternoon.
When she got the confirmation email it had a link to a PDF file stating pretty much all the same info in that article.
Washing hands, no kids under 5 handling chicks, no chickens in the house, etc.
So whats your theory on that? Big Ag controlling the hatcheries that are selling us chicks? Oh wait, Didn't you say big Ag didn't want us buying chickens?
Maybe big Ag has nothing to do with any of it. Maybe it's just people looking out for our safety.
Imagine that.
