BTW, some ILT vaccines can spread the disease to non-vaccinated birds. I'm getting in to an area that I'm not qualified to talk about really, so Clare PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong. There is shedding and non-shedding ILT vaccine. I think the non-shedding is the best because it will not affect non-vaccinated birds.

Tim
Sorry TIm, I don't have all the specs on the various ILT vaccines, but there was a recent article in the February 15, 2013 JAVMA (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association). I'm quoting this,

"For control of ILT, chickens can be immunized with attenuated live virus vaccines. These vaccines can be delivered via eye-drops, aerosols, or drinking water. However, modified-live vaccines possess variable degrees of residual virulence, which may increase with serial passage among birds and can cause disease in flocks."

I myself don't vaccinate. I have had respiratory disease after shows which I have treated with antibiotics. This obviously won't cure viral diseases such as ILT.

Thanks Clare. Thats basically what i thought. Tammy said some of her birds had been vaccinated. I thought there was a possibility the vaccinated birds could have spread it (ILT) to the non-vaccinated birds. According to your article that very well could have been the cause?

I don't vaccinate for anything but Fowl Pox. Its pretty prevalent here. Typically non-fatal, but the scabs prevent one from showing. The dry-pox if not treated can turn to wet-pox, which will kill birds. Better to vaccinate for it here.

Tim

I have heard "stories" of people picking up ILT from being cooped next to vaccinated birds at shows. The newer version of the ILT vaccine is not "supposed" to do that. Paul S. does vaccinate his birds for ILT, Clare. He is the only one in Texas I know of that does. I think he is afraid of picking it up at shows, he shows alot out of state.

Paul has a fairly large operation I think. He ships many chicks every year.

I sent an email to Dr. Morishita. We will see if she responds. It would have sounded more intelligent coming from you Clare. I lack the vocabulary to properly articulate at times.

Let me know. I have called her in the past. She is very academic. This would be a good topic for her to address in her articles in the Poultry Press if she is still writing them.

Honestly Tim i do not know I will ask Vet and find out . thats a Great Question and if my mistake helps others then i am glad it happened to me because that is ow we learn threw mistakes we and others make .

There are 2 vaccines Live and Modified live so i was gonna also ask him to help me with the best one . i believe the live gives them a small dose of the virus so they learn to fight it off not sure though

I have a Question i have asked the Vet he was unsure of the answer I dont think so is not good enough for me right now

i have 100 eggs in the incubator i placed in there just before the guy showed up like they are pipping today i am looking for info on this

will the chicks since i believe the guy gave me the disease would could they be bad too ? according to the vet he said that he did not know if this disease transfers to the eggs ,
Im thinking if Jerk boy did not give me this disease but my gut tells me he did since he just showed up birds where tested for npip before and where clear of everyhting and now sick i am pretty sure they are safe but jessie has been sitting on eggs in the nest box too ...................... i am sure i should just go smash those but i am at the what if

Did the vet tell you your birds had ILT????????? Did the necropsy at the College conclude it was ILT?????? If so your birds could of, in fact, gotten it from the previously vaccinated birds. How long of a period from the time the person you are referring to as "Jerk Boy" visited your place and your birds got sick? NPIP does not test for ILT as far as I know. How many total birds do you have? How many were affected by the disease? How many died? ......Too many unknowns to point the finger of guilt at "jerk boy".
