Hi Gary I think I have figured out how to eradicate the VH, let me know what you think.
I will take the Buff laced hen that I have pair bred and know is carrying VH and put a silver laced cockerel that I am not sure of over her, if any VH offspring result he gets the Axe because he is a carrier, if his offspring show no VH he is clean, I will put him in a separate pen. Then I will take a cockerel that I know is a carrier and put him over an unsure of hen and do the same process and put her in a clean pen if she is clean or put another hen to test, I will do this with all the hens and cockerels until I have a pen full of clean birds and then proceed to breed clean birds. I believe most of the silvers I have came from a crossing of Big Silver with the Gold Laced hens, the one Silver hen I had went broody before I could put her in the pen with the Big Silver, raised chicks and then went broody 2 more times this summer, she was in the pen with the Big Buff Laced boy who we know has VH, I will test her again using this same procedure. I may get lucky with her. So what do you think of the plan?? It may take a couple of years or so, but I am sure I will do it.
Sounds like that should work,( I will reread this in the morning when my brain is firing on all cylinders).

We got the large ones. One buff (the train) and one light (little sparrow). They are so great. My young son (15 months) loves them already. He just pets and pets and pets. They are the best birds ever. I want many many more. Now, I just have to convince my husband of that!

I got a noob Brahma question. It would be a question about all feather legged breeds, I guess.

How hard is it on them and you in wet or snowy weather when they are allowed to free range?
I can see the problems with Polish top feathers getting wet

but don't know about the leg feathers. Problems?

Just downloaded n printing the American Brahma Club membership form... Also hoping that becoming a member will lead me to some connections for show/breeder quality LF Dark breeders!
Good move, renewed mine yesterday at the show. Which would be your other best bet to meet some breeders, going to shows that is.

Would love to get to more shows! They are so far away I will be doing some planning for some time off the farm here next summer so we can attend... The local shows here had nothing for Brahmas nor the BLRW, or GLW I have... Was disappointed!!
Ihavent had any luck finding a show quality LF Dark breeder..... why is that! When I wanted to make a quality purchase with the BLRW it was clear whom the best of the best was just by readibg the posts etc but this is much more challanging...
I LOVE these Brahmas! The few I have are the sweetest most beautiful chickens ever along with my blrw from kentucky! Lol

thanks, my brain is sore from trying to figure it out, I love those Silver laced and I will get them right if it kills me. Way back in the post you posted a pic of one of your roosters, I am using that pic as the standard for my silver laced.

Shows can vary greatly, from local 4-H, county fair types, up to some long standing large shows.

Now even these big shows can vary from year to year. You need to watch which breed clubs are having breed speciality meets at which shows. Each breed club usually has their big national, regional, and lesser speciality shows that rotates among the various bigger shows. Attending a show that is sponsering one of these breed club meets will increase the odds of seeing birds and breeders of your breed of interest. This years Brahma national was at the Ohio National show this weekend. Next years is in Florida in January I believe.

How you find out about these shows, and which breed clubs will be featured, is to join the breed club, or subscibe to The Poultry Press. It comes out monthly, there are adds for the upcoming shows, which breed clubs will be having meets there, and pictures of the top birds from the last shows. Smart exhibitors who did well often run adds saying how they enjoyed the show, with a picture of their winning birds, placements, and there address or phone number. There are also adds for upcoming swap dates, breeders, and some good articles. Used to be you could make up the cost of the Press in Purina coupons inside, not so much any more.
