Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is preference with breeding orpingtons and rhode island reds. We have a rhode island red and buff orpington rooster and both breeds of hens. We could do both possibilities. Which do you think is best? Will there actually be a different outcome? We’ve had chickens for years, but this is our first time breeding.

So,

RIR rooster x BO hen

or

BO rooster x RIR hen

I could say what are your goals, it's easier to make decisions when we know what you want to achieve. But there are no sex linked characteristics involved and no real difference based on breed whichever way you make that cross. I'd suggest you pick your best stock (whatever you consider best based on your goals) and breed them. If egg laying is one of your goals, breed you best egg layers. If you want meat breed your largest roosters.

Are you trying to create Red Orpingtons? Or Buff RIR?
