Brooder question

Yea.. I know the coop before the chickens. I fought my husband on it when they came home. He was being lazy. And now I’m paying the price. The coop will be done in 2 weeks. The heat in the room is just heat from the house there is a heater vent in there. I have a heat lamp in there it stays about 70-72 degrees under the lamp, and not under the lamp 65-70. I crack the door to the garage every day for about 1/2 an hour. Then close it up. I think I’m more worried about the poop creating problems. I do clean in there every couple of days. But this is all my husbands fault 100% and believe me I’m not happy with him.
Oh Lordy I’ve been there too with the partner. I think building our latest coop almost broke us at times, but you’ll get through this. The chicks have plenty of room in there. The heat is blowing dry air into the room. It’s annoying for sure, but they will be fine for a few more weeks! When it’s all said and done you’ll be wondering why you stressed so much!

It’s coming along 😂 just not when I wanted it done.

So I have a question, I had to move my pullets out to my mud room. Because having them this size (5 weeks) was too much. It’s heated stays around 65-72 and also a heat lamp, a electric space heater of it gets too cold. My question is the ventilation. I can’t open the doors because it’s just still too cold out side. I have a small desk fan I’ll turn on to get circulation. But I just feel like that not enough for them. Any ideas on how to vent that room for fresh air or at least help with the smell and dust control. I clean out their area every 2-3 days and try to spot clean as much as possible. I just don’t want them to get sick.
All they need is a heat lamp or pad, the ambient temp is better off being cooler.

You really don't need the heat lamp or space heater at all, since this is inside the house your ambient temperatures are already warmer than they need at this age. And since you're planning to move them out in 2 weeks, you need to get them acclimated to cooler temperatures, so take advantage of this time to gradually drop the temperatures so they can move out immediately as soon as the coop is completed.

My mud room only heats to 45 degrees. It’s a bit cold, but I have it about 64-65 in there right now with the lamp.

Your chicks are 5 weeks old. Unless they're sickly or have unusual feathering (frizzle, silkie) 45 degrees is plenty warm for them, and you need to get them acclimated to colder temperatures or you still won't be able to move them out in 2 weeks.

That doesn't mean of course to cut off the lamp immediately - if it's 65 right now, then maybe remove the lamp half the day to let temps lower a bit. Or dim it/swap out for a lower wattage bulb.

Yea, they are 6 weeks old today, I did move the lamp up a few days ago. It’s still now 70 in there unless one of the ladies is laying on the thermometer lol so I’ll raise it up again. I was going to ask maybe if I could turn the lamp off during the day and back on at night. Weather is starting to get a bit better during the day, so on those days I think I’m going to open the door. And the the air in. Thank you so much for being so helpful.

Good luck with it all. Hopefully your coop gets built ASAP for you! It looks great BTW!

I have a feeling I will be in your situation. We aren't getting our chicks for 9 days but the coop isn't built. the spot for it to go is cleared out mostly and hopefully this weekend will be cleared out fully. But wood for the coop and run is being delivered the day after the chicks get here so hopefully my husband can start building it that weekend. He has a friend that raises chickens that told him last week that he was going to HATE having the chicks in the house for the whole time. My answer was: "well as long as the coop is done and we have electric out there or can get electric out there then I plan to move them out around 4-5 weeks old with heat so it won't be horrible having them in the house since they won't be in for the 6-8 weeks so hopefully the coop is done by then" figure that would motivate him. :)
