I wonder if a hen knows which chicks are boys or girls.
For this breed, you can’t tell before 7 weeks.

It's a big crack, I dropped another egg on it and the side caved in. I never broke an egg before and my first had to be that one

One my hens (I call her "La Brune") she has slippery eggs, can't get a good grip on them with my dry hands.

I know it may not work for you, but eggs can hatch shell-less in an incubator, probably not at this point in time though... ...do you have more eggs? You could always set more...?
