Bumblefoot help

Gently dry the foot completely and slather on honey, which acts as an antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic all in one, non-toxic Nu-Stock (available online and safe for all animals, too) or spray with Vetericyn, cover with gauze and wrap with vet wrap to secure the bandage and keep curious ducks bill away.

I think I’d do the sugar dine with this one too. Is the sugardine suppose to help draw?

I’m not sure if it draws. I used it to help keep it moist and to get the povidone iodine up in there as opposed to just wiping on the clear one. I read decolorized iodine is better but couldnt find if i should make the sugardine with it or not.

What kinda plastic bag? Like a ziplock? I’m looking for something to put on the boy so he stops fiddling with it. He’s pulled the gauze pad out twice and tried to eat it!
Be cautious using occluding dressings (non breathable materials like plastic) because you can actually make things worse. Some bacteria thrive in anaerobic environments, which is what you’ll create with a smothered, covered wound. If using a plastic covering, it should only be on for a short period of time. Think dogs going outside with a bootie over a bandage to keep it from getting soiled. Or a plastic wrap over a cast while bathing!
You could also use a wet-to-dry bandage if you’re trying to keep it moist without sacrificing air flow. Make sure you wrap whatever you’re using to cover the bandaging material underneath (vetrap?) high and low enough past everything to minimize the reach he’s got to get at it.

if he’s being really bad about fussing with it, I wouldn’t wrap it at all. Treat it and leave it open, keep him on softer footing. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I second honey if you want a non-antibiotic dressing, although in our experience found it works best for “on the mend” type wounds. Try to get actual honey or medicinal honey though, not the stuff you can get for cheap sometimes that isn’t actually pure honey. :)

i would put iodine on it if it were me and open it up and try to get the big puss ball out if theres one and squeeze it it and get the left overs and that should be it.

best of luck :D :D :D

Open it like cut them open? I’m really reluctant to try that. Especially with the girl as there’s a good chance she’ll get hurt struggling so much D: Thanks though!

I’ll remember the part about the plastic helping the bad bacteria colonize in there! Thanks! I’ve been wrapping him with the vetwrap but he’s pretty good. My neighbor had the idea to cut the gauze just big enough to cover the bumble to limit any extra he could grab. Seems to have worked for now!

A couple weeks ago my Runner girl’s toe swelled up, both top and bottom, and looking her over I found a very tiny cut on the bottom of her foot. I brought her inside to help keep her clean and more easily monitor her while I read up on treatment. She’s been getting almost daily baths to soften the foot, getting a vitamin + probiotic supplement, has had her foot wrapped up a few times with an antibiotic cream, and had decolorized iodine wiped on 3 times now.

She didnt have any scab initially but slowly started forming one last week. On Monday she finally formed a brown scab. I wasnt able to get it removed right away so today it has noticeably shrunk and now becoming one with her foot as it heals into the skin. This whole time the swelling hasnt changed a bit and her toe is just as big as it was to begin with.

So now i’m not sure what to do. Everything i read says to remove a big black scab and it’ll take the gunk with it. But there’s no big black scab. Just a small brown one that’s disappearing fast. I’m reluctant to lance her open and risk a secondary infection but i have no vet and dont know how to shrink this.View attachment 2114304
My chicken had bumble foot and the vet recommended soaking in epson salt with a little iodide. After soaking, the vet said to put honey on it (antibacterial) and wrap it. We also ended up having to give her 2 rounds of penicillin shots. The big black scab came off after a week, along with damaged tissue. It got reinfected again after the scab came off, which is why she needed the 2nd round of penicillin. She is fine now.

She was wrapped for 2 days with the antibiotic cream to soften the scab, then we soaked her for 20mins in epsom salt, and this happened:

The scab burst off and some of the skin is peeling away. I dunno what to do now. I dont know if that’s the bumble or her flesh or if the bumble is behind that or what. And i dont wanna be tugging on it if that’s her soft tissues.

I put on the clear iodine, sprayed with Vetericyn, then wrapped her with this Durvet epsom salt poultice drawing salve made for horses.
