BYC Café

Good morning everyone,

Margie, what kind of chicks are you getting today?

I've been drooling over various fertile eggs for sale. We have 1 BA that keeps wanting to brood but no rooster around. How do you time a broody spell with ordering fertile eggs? Or do you just get the eggs and she'll immediately feel like sitting on them? Sorry if it all sounds silly...this is a new area to me.

Have a good day all!

Thanks Scott!

I haven't ordered any eggs yet, wondered about the timing of it all. Plus there's the usual problem...so many breeds on the old wish list, not enough room for everything, lol.

Coffee in hand, baking cookies this morning for dad and uncles who are heading to Canada for more fishing. Yes, I know, we practically ARE in Canada...

On a side note, I will be guest baking at the bait shop/bakery in town next Tuesday!

Basement walls going in this week, well needed another twenty feet to get a good gallons per minute rate, should be finished today.

Driving test today. UGH.

yet more dmv shenanagins to prove that we Canucks can drive vehicles not just dog sleds and skidoos.

:/ I'm more worried about it than I should be I think.

I have wondered the same.
I needed to have started smaller and with a rooster.
Then every two years let a momma hatch a few out.

I think I will just let this flock flutter out and start all over.

Made me laugh! Good luck on the test! (with as many people that I see on the road that can't drive, I'm beginning to think it's harder to fail the test than it is to pass

) Anyways, I'm sure you'll do fine!

Alright, question here. Anyone ever had a broody sit on fake eggs, infertile eggs, etc.? Well, I think (man, I realllllly don't want to jinx myself!) one of my hens has gone herself. I caught her in a nesting box sitting on an egg and a spray can of Blu-Kote. It has a white lid, so I figured she must have thought it was a white egg (I've done that). So I move the Blu-Kote into a different spot, go in the next night, and she's on it again!

I take it away from her and give her some eggs, and so far so good! Bless her little heart, spray cans don't hatch.

Chicks! Oh my! So I have 4 Maraduna Basque, 1 Blue Cochin, ?2 Columbian Wyandotte and 1 chipmunk colored -possible Icelandic. 8 total
My friend took the rest which will be Icelandic and 4 free Jersey Giant. 1 black colored chick was DOA - don't know what kind. Our plan is that if the birds look good, then she can give me some Icelandic chicks next year and I will give her some Maraduna Basque.
The chicks seem to be doing well. I put them in with the last shipment and so the oldies are teaching the newbies how things work. When they get it set and I am sure there are no problems with the babies, then they will head out to the big coop.

Yeah, that would have been a good way to start for us too. It's the old woulda, coulda, shoulda thing.

Marge, it would be fun to see a picture or two of your Maraduna Basques!
