bio, as I understand it, you can only submit 4 names. 1 in each category. Read page 1 of this thread, and it explains the process.

4 names per quarter. They can all be for the same category or all different categories, or mixed. Cannot nominate the same person for multiple categories.

Jane for Friend
John for Friend
Bob for Greeter
Bill for Friend

Cannot nominate Jane for Greeter or any other award after you have nominated her for Friend.

I know that, but what I wonder is if I can go back to a nomination I submitted this morning for the purpose of improving my reasons in support of the nomination? ...

There's not a way to edit, unfortunately. You can resubmit the nomination and add in the notes that this new one supersedes the one you submitted earlier. Then I will delete your first one.
