My Partridge Pennedesenca pullet laid her first egg today! I almost missed it in the Dog kennel she is recovering in from the chicken attack.

The egg on the left is from Miranda the Blue Marans. The one on the right is the P Penne egg:

I might have to give her a tough name since she is a survivor:

OK, lets play NAME THAT CHICK!

This was a pain to try and figure out how to do it.

It is going to be backwards. The first ones are the questionables, then the lots of ones I THINK I know.

The total of chicks are
welsummers 9
barevelers 1 ( if there are 2 I made a mistake yesterday...)
Cream legbars 6
Silver leghorns 8

I have someone waiting for me to ID legbars, and pet rock wants some wellies so those are the most urgent id's.

Ok, I guess CL boy

i THINK this is a set of silver leghorns

i THINK this is Welsummers

But one of these wings is not like the other ones...

.
Hopefully some of these pictures are good enough to tell me whast ive got!

( the 12 olive eggers, 11 silkies 2 jubilee orph and 2 MF leghorns I figured out)

Here is my best guess.

The first 5 pictures (cl roo and 4 unknown) could be Cream Legbars, but it would be better to see body shot from top.

#6 could be a Welsummer Boy

Set of Leghorns -
Duel pictures - one on left looks like a wellie girl

Set of Wellies
Duel Picture: One on left does not look like a Welsummer, perhaps it is the mis-matched from above.

Good luck.

Hi other chicken folks:

Don't really know where to start this but: two days ago one of my hens got attacked by a pit bull; there's a pretty big piece of skin missing from under her wing. I've read over the chicken injuries section, talked to my sis the vet tech, and have been monitoring the hen. She's still with the flock and walks around really slowly, drinks and eats the meal worms given to her, but has less energy today. She looks kind of dejected. Has anyone had experience with a chicken missing a huge patch of skin? What antibiotics to use for infection, and I guess, does anyone know how chickens feel pain? I don't want to lose the hen, but I also don't want her suffering.

Thanks!

Christina

She's in shock. Keep her separated, and keep the wound clean. You can give her 1/4 aspirin crushed in 1 cup of water for pain. Give her scrambled eggs to keep her energy up and make sure she drinks.

I had a pullet hook her thigh on a nail. She couldn't use the leg at all and tore a large V shaped wound. She healed perfectly. They can heal from some pretty horrible wounds.

Closest I've ever come to having a Rainbow Basket! (Duck eggs are included in this pic though.

Cheating or not, those are pretty!

I have no clue except they're cute little fuzzy butts! I would think the age difference, like in these two would make it really hard to tell the little buggers apart! So my question is....when you are selling specific chicks and you didn't catch them hatching so you're not sure, like this situation, do you tell the customers that they may not be right breed and offer to exchange them? This is a concern of mine since I have my new incubator coming and putting different breeds in there.....especially ones that are similar looking chicks.

Thanks Ron and Deb for this idea (and also Ali for the blukote idea); I will try the feed store today and look for the gel Vetericyn; Its also good to hear some survival stories!

On a happier note - why raise ducks? Is it because they are friendly? Do the eggs taste better?

I have BluKote and Vetericyn drops and spray on hand. All great stuff to have in your chicken first aide kit.

Regarding the ducks- we have both chickens and ducks. Honestly the kids prefer the ducks although they enjoy the chickens. My ducks out lay my chickens My 11 ducks started laying last Sept/November and I get 8-11 eggs every single day. I have heritage breed chickens so they aren't heavy layers. The eggs are very big, amazing in baked goods...the ducks are goofy and fun to watch. Not better than chickens...just different than chickens. I also like them for eggs over chickens because they laid like gangbusters through the winter and fall. No lights. If they have cool water in the Summer they don't even seem to notice that it's hot, they love mucking about in the cold rain..just different.

Chiqita, I haven't had any of those breeds so I'm no help on id'ing them. But if I were receiving them and got an off breed I wouldn't mind, they are receiving quality chicks. We all try our best to deliver what's expected but I wonder if they would even mind a mix-up.
