You are so sweet!!! :love I can work out all of the ratios !!! I have a few extra boys right now that I will be making breeding pens for :) Great news!!! I talked the hubby into buying me a real incubator that I don't have to geek out on all the time! Woohoo!! Now to do the bator shopping!!! I have no idea what to get for quail and an occasional Silkie.
My husband took care of Ruby :hit ...That was his first time. I never have either, I made him wait until I was inside. I think it bothered him a little more than I thought it would bother my Army Ranger combat vet.
I'm hoping for the quail to just be lazy right now.... Chiqita, I didn't candle because I wasn't sure how to candle quail & most of them were shipped.

< hugs>
Do you have a candler? Or a led flashlight? If so go into a dark room (assuming no pips) and hold the egg in the top of your hand, making a open fist with your hand, flashlight on bottom. If You see through the egg or it glows is a dud. If is a dark mass its a chick. Or you can wait, but that will tell you what to expect.

Yo. You got the frizzle, my nizzle?
What's the going rate for 5 grams of OE?

Jeez and I thought only I stayed up late....

OMG LMAO!!!!! I am using my phone and the limited smileys there don 't do it justice!!!!

BTW I can't even explain this joke to ANYONE! They would think I have totally lost the little shred of sanity I have left.

Thank you very much for your replies! Today, I started to feel quite desperate trying to figure out what to do, and decided to ask on the thread. I am glad that I did! I will give it a good try tomorrow morning, and am really hoping that they will settle their differences without seriously hurting each other. Yes, there is plenty of space for the looser to escape to. This was the first time in my life which I have witnessed a rooster fight, and was quite an unpleasant experience. So sad that they can be so vicious towards each other...

Just a quick question here before you let the boys out, what breed are they? My mother has some game birds that the roosters will kill each other - no matter how far apart they can go, they refuse to separate and will fight until one is dead.... just want to make sure they are NOT a game bird breed! Otherwise I agree with the others, leave them alone and they will work it out.

Looks great to me! Not to ding my DH's handy-work but if your coop isn't up to code then I'm in REAL trouble!!! I'm so sorry about Ruby, this is the last thing you needed.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your quail. Yeah for a new incubator, good hubby!!! So whatcha thinking of getting and hatching next???

I definitely need to start my quail project. I am a 35 year old nurse who is super burnt out; been in it for 14 years. I started homeschooling my 3 & 10 year olds in January & I'm trying to stay home & not work away from the kids/ house/ animals very much. Not only is my main focus my dad's health, but quail eggs are great for everybody! If I can have eggs/ birds to sell while still helping my dad & my kids by staying home-- I'm happy & at least I'm bringing in a little money. I have my Etsy shop online too, but enough to help with feed & supplies would be great! We own a hardwood flooring company that my husband is having great success with, but he gets anxious when I'm not working at all. I'm lucky that he's my kind of crazy & he understands, kinda, that I need my birds :) So..... What kind of bator would you recommend for me to have about a hatch of 50-75/ month, Ron? Anybody ? Need great opinions!! Definitely need a turner:)

Hello ChickNmamma, The 8mos. old is Welsummer, and the 6mos.old ones are Jubilee Orpingtons. Couple of times that we tried it out, the Welsummer proved to be more aggressive. The other two are bigger, but, are not as agile. Should I go ahead and try it? I love them all, and under the circumstances, feeling terribly sad for the unfortunate situation.
Thank you!

My shipped eggs are on there way!!

I'm having them shipped to my work, so hopefully they'll be handled less. I told the early morning clerk that I needed him to cuddle the box,and talk to them as soon as they get there.

I'm a little nervous about hatching shipped eggs.
Isn't that fun... I think the key with shipped eggs is to listen to Ron and read the article in his signature......and did you read the Great Egg Shipping Experiement thread? It is a great resource. Also keep your expectations low. a 50% rate for shipped eggs is good.
Hi guys!! I need some positive Coturnix Quail hatching vibes!!!
This has been one hell of a week! My grandma, who passed the crazy chicken lady torch to me, passed away in front of me on the 8th, we have to put poor Ruby down today due to the Marek's thing, I'm losing weight like crazy & I cannot afford it. My mind is just going crazy right now & my quail are on day 18 & no wiggles yet. I have 33 eggs in the DIY bator. Chiqita--- Do you have any advice? Anybody? They are Jumbos. I'm breeding these quail to help my dad with his prostate cancer. I have read a lot about how valuable quail eggs are, health-wise.
Now I'm just rambling.... Anybody hatch quail?? The quail threads are not so helpful

I know what you mean :) I sometimes read at my desk and wil LOL about something. When I am asked what is funny there is just no way to explain it w/o looking....well, like one of us and other people just don't get it. We should come up with a secret hand shake or something so we would recognize one another . How about this http://www.sportsgrid.com/media/blake-griffin-sesame-street-chicken-dance/

BTW Ali way to be...seriously that was great what you offered!

So sorry to hear about Ruby. My DH culls my birds for me and I go into the house when he does it, too. He doesn't like doing it but he loves me and doesn't want me to have to do it. I will probably get to the point where I can do the culling but that day is not today.

Starting a quail project is exciting! I received 30+ bobwhite quail eggs with my new Hovabator Genesis 1588. I was not planning on ever hatching quail and just expected a few of the shipped eggs to hatch. 19 poppers hatched and they are crazy fun! They are 2 weeks old now and it is difficult to clean their brooder because they can hop completely out of it. We have lost a few over the sides and had to catch them! I have friends asking for quail eggs so I am thinking about getting some cots since they mature faster plus lay such beautiful eggs. I didn't know that there was a health benefit to quail eggs. Do you have a link to that article? Thank you!

I opted to buy the Genesis 1588 with turner because they are decent incubators and a good price at $200 shipped. It holds up to 41 chicken eggs and up to 120 quail eggs. But as soon as I started my first hatch, I wish that I had bought a Brinsea Octagon 40 with humidity pump or a Rcom Max 50. I have had 2 good hatches with the Genesis but the humidity reading was off and I had to mess with it. Of course, I dream of having a Brinsea cabinet incubator like Deb has!

That is the cutest clip! My 2 year old granddaughter was sitting on my lap and loved it! She is a chicken girl at heart already much to her mother's dismay! I keep catching her up in the chicken coop with the girls!

ok, i now officially have an overabundance of eggs for my broody girls, thanks to chiqita and deann and molly -- bowled over by your generosity, all three of you! and now faced with The Decision -- the two who went broody over the weekend are snuggled into a nest box together, sitting on some mutt & fake eggs. my choices are:

a) move one tonight to a pen that i can close, & hope that she settles in to her new digs, or

b) maybe wait another day & see if they are sharing the box without trouble, & then just let them co-brood?

they'd be getting their eggs at the same time, so should all hatch at once... not sure what's the best approach? any thoughts?

thanks!!

I usually let my broodies sit wherever they choose, then move them to private quarters after the chicks hatch. With 2 broodies, you will need to watch really carefully to make sure they don't fight over the chicks. Some hens co-brood just fine, others not so much. You just have to try.
